In the most recent episode of Joe Rogan Experience, the most popular podcast presenter and UFC commentator Joe Rogan and Canadian clinical psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson debate the impact of psychedelic experiences on religious shaping.
The American standup comedian and MMA enthusiast initiated the topic by exploring the significance of psychedelic experiences in achieving spiritual enlightenment, he said:
"It's possible that, the path through this sort of uh... quest for Spiritual Enlightenment and it's not the Timothy Leary thing was. I mean it was dismissed by a lot of other psychedelic pioneers of the time. They saw the flaws."
To which Dr. Peterson added:
"Definitely the people who are already experimenting with ideas of proper set and also do that in the early 60's.
Rogan agreed and continued:
"Yes, and also the people that had no desire to run a group of like-minded people. Which Leary did, he wanted to fell into that culture, that hippie counterculture and also I think he fell into the Cult of Personality . It fell into this thing that happens when too many people are paying attention to you and you think you have all the answers it's very dangerous."
Peterson stated about the effects of psychedelics, he said:
"Yeah especially if you combine that with psychedelics, that turns out to be a problem, right."
Rogan replied:
"Yes, it's possible. The intoxicating grip of that, the power that you have over these people which is very... it's unavoidable."
