Joe Rogan recently discussed the ruthless underbelly of boxing while discussing the many deaths the sport has witnessed inside the squared circle. Rogan went on to narrate the blood-curdling incident involving the night boxer Emile Griffith. Joe narrated that the boxer took matters into his own hands, quite literally, to answer homophobic and derogotary remarks.

The sport of boxing is undeniably violent. Only a small percentage of boxers suffer fatal injuries in their careers. But studies show that between sixty and eighty-seven percent of those who have fought frequently suffer from chronic brain damage. Punch drunk syndrome and the higher death rate of boxers compared to athletes in other contact sports only add to the perception that boxing is a deal with death.

During episode #1918 of The Joe Rogan Experience, the UFC play-by-play commentator narrated the terrible aftermath of the fight between Emile Griffith and Benny Paret:

"Benny Paret was killed by Emile Griffith. Emile Griffith beat him to death in the ring after Benny Paret teased him for being gay. He kept talking sh*t about him being gay. He beat him to death." (From 0:11 to 0:24)

Later in his career in 1962, Emile Griffith came out as bisexual, a stance that was obviously far less accepted back then than it is now. As did the majority of the boxing community, Paret suspected that his opponent was homosexual and went too far at the weigh-in. As Griffith stood on the scale, Paret used a homophobic insult on his opponent, calling him a "maricon," which both men understood to mean "fa**ot".

Griffith trapped a dazed Paret into a corner and began a flurry of blows to the Cuban's head midway through the 12th round. In six seconds, Griffith unleashed 18 consecutive strikes before referee Ruby Goldstein dragged Griffith away. Unfortunately, it was too late.

When Joe Rogan and Sean O'Malley discussed why boxing is more more dangerous than MMA

Joe Rogan and Sean O'Malley once debated on the UFC color commentator's podcast why boxing is more dangerous to athletes than mixed martial arts.

The top-ranked UFC bantamweight contender remarked that boxers are subjected to constant sparring sessions. According to 'Sugar,' boxers are at a higher risk due to the accumulated harm caused by their routinely grueling and strenuous training regimen.

Speaking on episode #133 of The Joe Rogan Experience, O'Malley stated:

"I had a pro-boxing fight a while back and I went to a pro-boxing gym... You spar! Monday, Wednesday, Friday, three times a week hard. I think a lot of the damage is in sparring and then you go in there and get dropped, get back up, get an eight-count, get dropped again."

O'Malley added:

"I think it's probably a mixture between how hard those motherf**kers spar and the accumulation of getting hit in the head. It's hard to watch."
