English striker Jonathan Haggerty explains the dangers that come with using four-ounce gloves in Muay Thai contests.

'The General' is a multi-time Muay Thai English and British Champion, who attained ONE Championship's flyweight Muay Thai world title back in 2019. His current three-fight win has yielded him a bantamweight Muay Thai title bout against the great Nong-O Hama at ONE Fight Night 9 on Prime Video.

Jonathan Haggerty spoke about what it's like taking part in Muay Thai bouts using four-ounce gloves, rather than the traditional 10-ounce gloves.

Jonathan Haggerty chose Muay Thai over MMA to win a world title, Nong-O has been wanting this matchup for a long time

The 26-year-old former Muay Thai champ chose to continue chasing belts in the sport after losing his flyweight belt rather than transitioning to MMA. Haggerty spoke on the decision in an interview with The MMA Superfan, revealing:

“The plan was, I sat down with my team, and there were two options. We can go bantamweight Muay Thai or we can go fully into MMA. I chose bantamweight Muay Thai because I feel like I want to get the belt again at Muay Thai. I’m destined to get that. I want that belt, especially the new belt. We chose Muay Thai.”

Meanwhile, Nong-O Hama has had his crosshairs set on Haggerty for quite some time. The champ told ONE:

“I’ve been watching Haggerty for a long time now, going back to his world title fights against Rodtang. He’s very skilled and uses many different Muay Thai techniques,” said the champion, alluding to fellow Thai superstar and world champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon.

Haggerty earned the right to challenge Nong-O after picking up three straight wins over Taiki Naito, Mongkolpetch Petchyindee Academy, and Vladimir Kuzmin.

Be sure to tune in to ONE Fight Night 9 on April 22 to see Jonathan Haggerty challenge the great Nong-O Hama for the bantamweight Muay Thai world title, live from the legendary Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

All of the action can be broadcast live and for free across North America with an Amazon Prime subscription.
