Jon Jones shoots for heavyweight gold in his UFC return

Jon Jones is making his octagon return after three years away from the sport. To add to the intrigue, he's jumping up a weight class to challenge the No.1 contender Ciryl Gane for the vacant UFC heavyweight title.

With the upcoming UFC 285 main event, Jon Jones will fight in his 16th title fight. There is a good argument for Jones to be considered the 'greatest of all time.' However, Jones is stepping into new territory for the first time in his career, against bigger and scarier opponents.

Certain things factor into jumping up a weight class. Generally, fighters give up speed for power when fighting above their weight. We are still yet to find out if Jones' muscle gain will factor into his speed, agility and power.

What we do know for sure, is that Gane has speed and movement unlike any other fighter in the heavyweight division. 'Bon Gamin' surged through the heavyweight rankings, beating the likes of Junior dos Santos, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, Alexander Volkov and Derrick Lewis to challenge for the title.

Despite not winning the heavyweight championship against Francis Ngannou, Gane held his own in striking exchanges with the Cameroonian former heavyweight champion.

In his last fight, 'Bon Gamin' put on a striking clinic against Tai Tuivasa at UFC Fight Night 209, finishing the Kiwi-Samoan in the third round.

If Jones has to win this fight, he will have to capitalize on his superior wrestling and grappling abilities over Gane. On the feet: Ciryl Gane has the advantage with regards to speed, dexterity, movement, and cutting angles.

Still, Jon Jones is one of the most creative fighters to step into the octagon with a high fight IQ. It remains to be seen if Jones will realize at glory at heavyweight.
