Mario Bautista delivered a sharp, composed performance against former Bellator champ Patchy Mix at UFC 316. He earned a unanimous decision win for the dominant showcase, extending his win streak to eight.
The victory should have been a high point for the 31-year-old bantamweight. Instead, it played out in a strange atmosphere.
Bautista has become a divisive figure since his grinding, low-output wrestling display against Jose Aldo last October. Many fans now tune in wanting to see him lose.
Against Mix, he changed the perception with crisp stand-up work and steady pressure across three rounds. Even so, pockets of the crowd showered the cage with boos during the fight.

Speaking in a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Bautista said:
"I'm standing up with [Patchy Mix] the whole time, and they're booing. In my mind, I'm thinking, damn, I can't make any of these people happy."

Some fans argued the jeers were for Mix, whose performance lacked urgency. Others felt the animosity toward Bautista lingered from his Aldo bout.
Several fans took to X and wrote:
"They were definitely booing Mix."
"People just pissed because of the way he fought Aldo."
"Were they booing him or Patchy? Because Patchy just did not look good at all."
"Patchy froze and people already didn't like Bautista. If Patchy actually gave him a fight, people might have gone on to respect Bautista win or lose, a bit like they did with Belal [Muhammad] after losing to JDM [Jack Della Maddalena]. The fans basically watched a guy they didn't like hit a yapping heavy bag."
"To be honest it's not really his fault Patchy Mix just looked like some random guy who was put there for the fight to continue."

Mario Bautista points out Jose Aldo’s failure to adjust in recent fights
Mario Bautista noted that Jose Aldo failed to make key adjustments in his last two outings, including their own fight. Bautista highlighted how he kept his back off the cage against Patchy Mix, a basic tactic he felt Aldo should have executed. He also weighed in on Aldo’s recent loss to Aiemann Zahabi, saying the former champion only looked dangerous briefly before fading.
Speaking in the aforementioned interview with Ariel Helwani, Bautista said:
"Someone like Aldo, who’s a multiple-time world champion, who’s been around here for so long, couldn’t even do that. So yeah, it’s just a weird spot. I mean, that’s exactly why he didn’t let him go. You know, I could have got kicked in the face like that. It was a crazy performance. You know, we got to see a little bit of the old Aldo for a good maybe 15, 20 seconds, and then it just went downhill after that."
