Mikey Musumeci delivered another incredible performance inside the circle against the dangerous Mongolian grappling Gantumur Bayanduuren.

Musumeci successfully defended his ONE lightweight submission grappling world championship for the first time since capturing the title in September at ONE on Prime Video 2.

‘Darth Rigatoni’ was not able to force the tap out but had Bayanduuren in a bad spot for the majority of the 10-minute match. Per a report from the South China Morning Post, Bayanduuren tore his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in addition to suffering a broken ankle in the contest.

Team Lakay standout Stephen Loman shared his thoughts on the highly entertaining submission grappling match in a recent interview with The MMA Superfan and lauded Bayanduuren’s toughness:

“Gantumur Bayanduuren is a warrior, and he showed just how tough he was because he didn’t surrender and he didn’t tap, even when Mikey caught him in so many difficult positions. I think Mikey said he heard his knees and his ankles pop."

He added:

“That said, Mikey showed incredible technique with his leg lock, and he was really motivated to get the submission. He showed that once he gets a hold of a limb, there’s basically no escape.”

With his injuries, it will be quite a while before Gantumur Bayanduuren is back in action, but the ONE Championship CEO has already expressed a willingness to bring him back to the circle.

Mikey Musumeci believes Gantumur Bayanduuren should have tapped out

Since suffering a gruesome injury at ONE Fight Night 6 on Prime Video, Gantumur Bayanduuren has received the attention of the combat sports community for his unparalleled toughness. Unfortunately, that toughness didn’t do much for the Mongolian’s chances of winning the match.

Speaking at the event’s post-fight press conference, opponent Mikey Musumeci believes Bayanduuren would have been better served by tapping out rather than allowing himself to suffer multiple devastating injuries:

“Yeah, I just think it was just no point, he lost anyway. For example, you're winning a match in IBJJF, where there are points and you're in a submission. You tap it out, you might pop your foot or something but you win the match. But if you're completely losing a match, and you're in full-lock submission, just not tapping, you're just going to injure yourself.”

Were you impressed with Gantumur Bayanduuren’s ability to fight through the pain at ONE Fight Night 6 or do you agree with Mikey Musumeci’s assessment of the situation?
