Velasquez is said to have chased Goularte in his truck and proceeded to ram his vehicle into the suspected child molester's vehicle, which had his stepfather and mother aboard, before opening fire. The shot missed Goularte but hit his stepfather, although the injuries sustained were non-fatal.

Following the incident, Velasquez was booked on multiple charges, including one count of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The former heavyweight champion was incarcerated for eight months and denied bail twice over multiple court hearings. However, on November 8, Velasquez was granted a $1 million bail.

Earlier this year in June, Velasquez, on behalf of his son, filed a civil lawsuit against Harry Goularte with charges of sexual molestation. Goularte's stepfather and mother were involved in the lawsuit as they operated the child care center where the alleged incident took place.
