MMA fighter Jimmy Drago extended his record to 4-1 with a victory over Gabe Barletta at Maverick 22 on Saturday night to become the welterweight champion.

Drago hails from New York, and was the star of his high school football team and played as a wide receiver. He also began training Karate at the age of five, and has continued his athletic pursuit that was inspired by his father.

He has balanced his life as a fighter with a full-time job as an ironworker, and currently trains at Animals MMA.

Drago made his professional MMA debut in 2019 at Ring of Combat 68, where he was defeated by Lenny Rufati. However, Jimmy Drago has won his last four fights and has aspirations of fighting in the UFC one day, according to an interview with Jokermag.

Drago is now the Maverick MMA welterweight champion, but a date and opponent for his first title defense is yet to be announced.

At the age of 28, Jimmy Drago will hope to catch the attention of a big MMA promotion soon with another stellar performance or two in the cage.


MMA Twitter explodes over controversial scorecards at UFC San Antonio

UFC San Antonio was headlined by an epic bantamweight clash between Marlon Vera and Cory Sandhagen. 'The Sandman' was awarded a surprising split-decision victory, with many believing that he won the bout comfortably.

Joel Ojeda scored the contest 3-2 in favor of 'Chito', awarding the bantamweight contender the last three rounds of the bout.

Twitter was sent into meltdown over Ojeda's mystifying scorecard, with fans and fighters alike sharing their thoughts. UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling said this:

"I just want an explanation. This is happening way too often..."

Mixed martial arts prediction app, Verdict, shared the scorecards of all fans who scored the fight live using the Verdict app. According to their post, Sandhagen won all five rounds on the "Verdict Scorecards":

"Only in Texas will you have one judge that scored the fight 50-45 for one fighter and 48-47 for the opposite fighter. It was all Cory Sandhagen on the Verdict Scorecard for all 5 rounds."
