Will Canelo Alvarez fight David Benavidez next? Manager reveals contract plans

Canelo Alvarez vs. David Benavidez might be the next major bout for both fighters, as the latter's manager plans to submit a contract this week.

'The Mexican Monster' is fresh off his clash against Caleb Plant in March. The two headlined a Showtime pay-per-view outing, with Benavidez scoring a lopsided unanimous decision victory. In the process, he moved one step closer to a clash against Alvarez.

A clash between the two super-middleweight stars has long been discussed. However, Alvarez has shown disinterest in the fight until now, despite calls from legends such as Mike Tyson to make the bout happen. For his part, Benavidez has routinely called for the fight.

However, he's not just talking about it. Benavidez is actively pursuing the bout with his actions as well. As first reported by Michael Benson of TalkSport, David Benavidez's manager has declared that he will be sending Canelo Alvarez's team a contract for the proposed fight. Furthermore, he plans to meet with coach Eddy Reynoso later today.

Given that the Mexican superstar is fresh off his win over John Ryder earlier this month, the bout likely isn't going to happen for a while. However, the news that the two are getting into talks is positive. As of now, there's no targeted date, or timetable, for Alvarez's return to the boxing ring.

Canelo Alvarez vs. David Benavidez: Mike Tyson makes prediction

'Iron' Mike Tyson wants to see Canelo Alvarez vs. David Benavidez badly.

The former heavyweight champion has long been a massive fan of 'The Mexican Monster'. While many fans have only taken notice of Benavidez since his most recent high-profile win, that wasn't the case with Tyson.

Instead, the former heavyweight champion has been calling to see the super-middleweights clash for years now. In an interview with Boxing Arabia podcast in late March, Tyson discussed the possible fight between Alvarez and Benavidez.

There, the former heavyweight champion stated that he would pick David Benavidez to defeat Canelo Alvarez. However, Tyson didn't stop there and added that he believes 'The Mexican Monster' could even defeat light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol:

“Benavidez is my guy, I think he can beat anybody in the division. I love Canelo, but he’s not going to beat him. He’s a little past his prime I think he [Benavidez] could even beat the guy who beat Canelo, Dmitriy Bivol.”
