Brian Ortega finished Frankie Edgar in devastating and unprecedented fashion with many Reddit users looking back to reflect on that UFC 222 performance.

Ortega entered this March 2018 fight having not tasted defeat across 14 pro-MMA fights and was unbeaten overall as a professional mixed martial artist. Edgar was a former UFC lightweight champion and had back-to-back wins notched at 145 pounds over Jeremy Stephens and Yair Rodriguez.

This was following a second featherweight title bid falling short to Jose Aldo with their first fight being for the lineal belt and their UFC 200 fight was for interim gold. 'The Answer' was well established across multiple UFC weight categories but that did not stop Ortega from becoming the first fighter to halt him with strikes in the waning seconds of the opening round of their fight.

Brian Ortega and his next UFC fight

Since the Edgar fight, Brian Ortega has gone on to contend for the UFC featherweight title two times and could potentially continue carving out his path to a third opportunity in the future as he returns to the cage this weekend. The 33-year-old readies to compete on somewhat short notice as part of an international fight week pay-per-view contest.

Ortega will do battle in the co-main event of UFC 303 against the no. 14-ranked contender at featherweight, Diego Lopes. He enters the fight as the number three-ranked contender for this high-stakes clash at 145 pounds on June 29.

'T-City' may be able to go on a run to a third crack at the featherweight belt although recent interviews indicate a focus on another weight category for the foreseeable future. Ortega has been talking about a move up north to lightweight following his looming matchup this weekend.

The California native is eyeing a different division while 145 pounds seems a bit congested at the top. This is in a landscape with new champ Ilia Topuria facing potential future challenges with BMF champ Max Holloway and a possible rematch with former titleholder Alexander Volkanovski.

While there is a future focus on upward mobility and new challenges at 155 pounds, the trajectory in that new weight class will be informed, to a degree, by how the Lopes contest plays out this weekend.
