MMA Twitter is in splits after the UFC sent out a memo banning fighters from betting on any UFC fight.

In the letter, obtained by MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, Hunter Campbell stated that the UFC athlete code of conduct will now include a prohibition on wagering in UFC fights. The company's Chief Business Officer wrote:

"As you know, the UFC Athlete Conduct Policy requires UFC’s contracted athletes to act in a legal, ethical, and responsible manner and avoid conduct detrimental to the integrity of the UFC organization. In light of clear direction that we have received from regulators responsible for the regulated sports betting industry in the United States, we are compelled at this time to recognize in the UFC Athlete Conduct Policy certain restrictions relating to wagering by our athletes, members of their teams and certain others."

The new restrictions elicited mixed reactions from UFC fans on social media. Most are of the opinion that athletes should absolutely be allowed to bet on fights they have no chance of influencing the outcome. Some even pointed out that the UFC found another way of removing an income stream from fighters.

Meanwhile, a few others have pointed out that almost every other major sporting league in the US does the same. This group believes the new betting regulations are warranted.

The development came as a surprise to many as several fighters have been vocal about betting on UFC fights. The likes of Derek Brunson, Casey O’Neill, James Krause, and Jeff Molina have posted their winnings online.

UFC fighter reveals he's banned from using betting apps

In light of the recent issue, PFL fighter Chris Wade revealed that betting restrictions have always applied to professional athletes.

The 35-year-old fighter revealed that he once tried to create an account on DraftKings, only to be denied due to his profession. According to Wade, not only is he banned from betting on MMA fights, but he also isn't permitted to gamble in other professional sports.

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman caught wind of Wade's tweet and confirmed that he had the same experience. The veteran UFC fighter revealed that he was also denied an account by DraftKings.
