Earlier this week, Khabib Nurmagomedov had a confrontation with Artem Lobov, who is a longtime friend and training partner of the 'Notorious' Conor McGregor.
All hell broke loose inside the Barclays Center, once McGregor and his teammates trespassed into the building to retaliate Khabib, and within no time, there was the destruction of public property, vandalizing of fighters van, injured fighters, canceled fights and rumors of an arrest warrant.
We all love a big drama show, it's a part and parcel of combat sport. But, it should not be at the expense of other people's safety.
Conor McGregor proved once again, that he can do whatever he wants. But this time, there are some repercussions.
Will he serve Jail time? What does the law say?
The New York Penal Law section 145.10 deals with 2nd-degree criminal mischief. It is a felony punishable by up to seven years in state prison.
If you damage the property of another without permission or authority, you are guilty of this crime. If that damage exceeds $5,000 in value, you are guilty of this offense.
If the damage is less than $5,000, it is a 3rd-degree criminal mischief. It is a felony punishable by up to four years in state prison.
A person commits misdemeanor assault by improperly causing someone else to suffer a “physical injury" using a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument.
A defendant convicted of misdemeanor assault can be sentenced to a jail term not to exceed one year, or placed on probation for three years, and fined up to $1,000 as well.
This looks like a really scary scenario for McGregor, and if found guilty, can destroy his career.
Worst-case scenario, he might get few months of jail time or a visa ban, or it might be done in few years of litigation and a fine. In that case, he might just pay it off and call it a day.
Will Conor fight again?
This can only be rightly answered by his lawyer'(s). But, if he walks away with a fine and no jail time, he can be back again this year to finish his business with team Khabib.
