Sarah Sjöström: A Brief Biography
Sarah Sjostrom is a Swedish female swimmer born on 17th August 1993. She is a native of Salem in Stockholm, Sweden. Sarah is a Butterfly and Freestyle specialist and represents Sweden in both events.
Background:
Sarah Sjostrom was born to Goran Sjostrom and Jenny Sjostrom. She was born and raised in Salem in Stockholm. Sarah has a brother Linus Sjostrom.
Sarah was initially pursuing her interest in handball and football. She tried her hand at swimming after her school best friend joined a local swim club. Sarah attended high school in her hometown, where began to take up competitive swimming.
In 2009, after graduating from high school, Sarah Sjostrom joined Fredrika Bremergymnasiet, where she had pursued her degree in Communication and Media. She is currently training at Sodertorns Swim Club and with coach Johan Wallberg.
Rise to Glory:
Sarah Sjostrom made her international debut at the 2008 European Aquatics Championships, where she clinched the Gold medal in 100m Butterfly and a Bronze in 4x100m Freestyle. That year, she competed at the European Swimming Championships and took home a Silver medal in 4x50m Freestyle.
Between 2009 and 2017, Sarah had won eight European Swimming titles in 50m Butterfly (2013 and 2015), 100m Butterfly (2013, 2017, and 2019), 100m Freestyle (2015), 50m Freestyle and 4x50m Medley (2017).
At the 2010 European Aquatics Championships, Sarah clinched the 100m Butterfly title, a Silver medal in 4x100m Medley, and a Bronze in 4x100m Freestyle. She would go on to win 12 European Aquatics titles in 100m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly (2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018), 100m Butterfly (2016 and 2018), 4x100m Freestyle (2014), and 50m Freestyle (2018).
In 2014, at the Swedish Swimming Championships, Sarah had shattered the 50m Freestyle world record while claiming the national title. She has multiple national titles in Freestyle and Butterfly events under her belt.
Sarah Sjostrom holds world aquatics records in 50m, 100m Freestyles, 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, and swimming records in 200m, 1500m Freestyles, and 100m Butterfly.
Major Achievements:
Sarah Sjostrom made her Olympics debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she finished 27th in 100m Butterfly heats and 29th in 100m Freestyle heats. The following year, she won the 100m Butterfly title at the World Aquatics Championships.
In 2012, Sarah competed in her second Olympics at the London Olympics and finished 4th in 100m Butterfly. In 2014, she clinched three Gold medals in 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, and 200m Butterfly and a Silver in 100m Freestyle at the World Swimming Championships.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Sarah clinched a Gold medal, a Silver, and a Bronze in 100m Butterfly, 200m Freestyle, and 100m Freestyle, respectively. Between 2013 and 2019, she had won seven World Aquatics titles in 100m Butterfly (2013, 2015, and 2017), 50m Butterfly (2015, 2017, and 2019), and 50m Freestyle (2017).
Sarah Sjostrom will compete in her third Olympics at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and is one of the strong contenders to medal in 50m, 100m, 200m Freestyles, and 100m Butterfly.
