Bob Saget suffered blunt head trauma from an accidental blow to the back of his head, in all probability from a fall.

Bob Saget was found unconscious in his room at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, south of Orlando, Florida, near Williamsburg, on January 9, 2022, at around 4 pm Eastern Standard Time. He had missed his checkout time, and family members became worried because they couldn't reach him.


Saget was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. He was 65 years old. Foul play and drug use were ruled out by the medical examiner, though no cause of death was announced at that instance. He had performed in Ponte Vedra Beach the previous evening on his stand-up tour, when he died.

According to an autopsy report released on February 9, 2022, Saget died from injuries he sustained from a fall and accidental blow to the back of his head, which resulted in subdural hematoma and subarachnoid hemorrhage. At the time of his death, he was COVID-19 positive, though there were no signs of inflammation.


Saget’s family sued county officials in February 2022 to prevent the release of additional documents from the investigation of his death, arguing that their graphic content would present a privacy violation. On March 14, an injunction was issued against their release.


ABC interrupted America's Funniest Home Videos in the Eastern and Central time zones to announce that news of Saget's death had broken. A tribute video was posted on the show's official YouTube channel. A dedication to Saget was added at the end of the next episode.

Saget had been given donations and offers to help the charity Scleroderma Research Foundation, whose board of directors he had been on since 2003. The foundation's executive director said on January 13, 2022, that the foundation has received donations from more than 1,500 people from all over the world and that they add up to more than $90,000. Furthermore, the charity received a $1.5 million grant from one of its board members, which will match every donation made in Saget’s memory.


Saget's funeral took place on January 14, 2022. He was buried near his parents and sister in Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery. A tribute special was filmed at The Comedy Store on January 30 by longtime friend Mike Binder. It was titled “Dirty Daddy: The Bob Saget Tribute” and released on Netflix on June 10, 2022. The footage included a private memorial held at Jeff Franklin's home.
