Emergency services were called on March 25, 2022, to the Four Seasons Casa Medina hotel in Bogota, Colombia, where Hawkins had chest pain in his hotel room. On arrival, emergency services discovered that Hawkins was not responding and performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead on the premises at the age of 50.


However, preliminary autopsy results revealed that the musician had ten types of drugs in his system prior to his tragic death. Taylor Hawkins's heart weighed twice as much as men his age. He suffered a cardiovascular collapse from a cocktail of drugs, including heroin, marijuana, and opioids, according to investigators.

Oliver Taylor Hawkins was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1972 and grew up in Laguna Beach, CA. Hawkins was the youngest in a family of three, with one older sibling, Jason, and Heather.


In 1990 he graduated from Laguna Beach High School, where he befriended Jon Davison, lead singer of Yes. Before playing for the Foo Fighters in 1997, Hawkins performed for the small band Sylvia before getting his first big drumming job for Canadian singer Sass Jordan.


By the mid-1990s, he was drumming on Alanis Morrissette's tour before Dave Grohl asked him to join Foo Fighters. The band was formed in 1994 as a solo project by lead singer Grohl before he searched for more members.

With Sylvia and The Foo Fighters, Hawkins embarked on his own parallel project called Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders. Hawkins was simultaneously a drummer and singer for the American rock group. On March 21, 2006, the group launched its first eponymous album with 11 tracks. The second album, Red Light Fever, came out in 2019 with guest performers including Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor.


Their third and last record, Get the Money, was released on October 15, 2019. After Hawkins died, his bandmates canceled their show scheduled for the Grammy Awards in April 2022. The band has also rescinded all scheduled tour dates.
