Stranger Things is not based on a true story but rather on a conspiracy theory called the Montauk Project.

The Montauk Project is a conspiracy theory that claims that the US government has been conducting covert projects in Montauk, New York. This is where, according to the conspiracy theory, where they experiment with time travel and psychological warfare, which eventually served as the inspiration for the fictional series Stranger Things.

First and foremost, Stranger Things is a fantasy-horror series that successfully blends adventure, comedy, romance, and action. The presence of fantasy and horror components indicates that the series features supernatural and fantastical events. After all, it centers around a village with a doorway to a separate dimension where many monsters reside.

It is clear from the storyline why Stranger Things isn't a true story, unless there is solid proof that there is a portal leading to a dimension where unusual creatures reside or that there is a government project testing youngsters with amazing and supernatural skills.

What is Stranger Things inspired by?

The Montauk Project is the inspiration behind Stranger Things and originally, the Duffer Brothers decided to name the show "Montauk.” True believers of the theory claim that the U.S. military was used to conduct experimental tests on children for further research in the fields of time travel and psychological warfare.

The kids were often abducted or kidnapped for such tests, as certain reported abductees claim. Preston B. Nichols, one of the reported abductees, eventually published a book about his encounter called “The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time.” It is said that the experiments were carried out at Montauk Air Force Station and Camp Hero.

The Montauk Project is obviously nothing more than a bizarre conspiracy idea. But the CIA did, however, run a comparable operation by the name of MKUltra. The project, which was run in conjunction with the U.S. Army Biological Warfare Laboratories, aimed to create medications that might weaken people through mind manipulation.

The MKUltra operation is significant to the Stranger Things story since it served as Dr. Brenner's previous workplace before he moved to Hawkins Lab and raised Eleven (the lead). Eleven's mother participated in the MKUltra tests while she was also pregnant..

What is the plot of Stranger Things?

The plot explained below does have some basic spoilers; however, they won’t ruin the fun but will aid in a further understanding of how the series culminates.

Season 1

When a terrible monster-like creature from the Upside Down emerges suddenly as young Will Byers is cycling home after a "Dungeons & Dragons" session at a friend's house, the monster kidnaps Will and takes him to another reality. The investigation into Will's disappearance is started by his friends Dustin, Lucas, and Mike.

While searching for Will in a nearby forest, the boys come upon a girl with a shaved head wearing a hospital gown, whom they let stay in Mike's basement. They realise that she has psychokinetic talents and that her name is Eleven.

Will's mother, Joyce, becomes captivated by paranormal occurrences influencing the home's electrical system and believes Will is speaking to her. She watches (and is frightened by) the same creature that took Will as these bizarre happenings continue. Police chief Jim Hopper starts looking into the murky past of the adjacent national laboratory as he gets distrustful of the institution.

Season 2

As the Mind Flayer, a massive entity from the Upside Down, terrorizes Hawkins once more and takes possession of Will in the fall of 1984, Joyce and Hopper, together with Will's friends Mike, Dustin, and Lucas, Mike's sister Nancy, Will's brother Jonathan, and Nancy's boyfriend Steve Harrington, are all drawn back to the town.

To stop the menace from growing, the entire group—including Max Mayfield, a stranger from California—must once more work together.

Season 3

Hawkins in 1985, when the Starcourt Mall first opened, was the talk of the town, and other stores had to close because of its prominence. Hopper feels estranged from Eleven and is against her romantic connection with Mike. Joyce is thinking of leaving Hawkins with her kids. Additionally, she enlists Hopper's assistance to look into the cause of her magnet's depletion of magnetism, which will make sense in the series.

Despite Eleven having closed the portal, Will starts to get visions of the Upside Down, and they know the Mind Flayer is still active. Eleven and her companions are forced to fight Billy Hargrove, Max's stepbrother, and the other possessed people in order to defeat the Mind Flayer in its new, dreadful form.

Season 4

The fourth season, which takes place eight months after the events of the third season and is divided into various storylines, is based on March 1986.

The first storyline is set in Hawkins, where a number of teens are mysteriously dead. The Hawkins High School basketball team, led by Jason Carver, is searching for Eddie Munson, the leader of a Dungeons & Dragons group called the Hellfire Club, since they suspect him of utilising demonic abilities to murder Chrissy Cunningham, Jason's girlfriend. During their investigation, Dustin, Max, Lucas, Erica, Nancy, Steve, Robin, and Eddie learned that the murders were committed by a powerful entity that resides in the Upside Down, whom they eventually named "Vecna."

In the second storyline, Mike pays a visit to Eleven, Will, and Jonathan in their new residence in California. While Mike, Will, Jonathan, and his friend Argyle try to find her, Eleven leaves with Dr. Martin Brenner and Sam Owens to a covert facility to enable her to reclaim her powers due to the events in Hawkins and the impending danger to her friends.

The third storyline centers on Joyce and Murray Bauman, who are informed that Hopper might still be alive and instructed to bring cash to make arrangements for his transfer. Hopper is being detained in a Soviet prison camp in Kamchatka, where he and the other prisoners are made to fight a captive Demogorgon.

Season 5

The Hawkins gang's final journey will be the focus of Stranger Things Season 5 as they attempt to unravel how to finally defeat Vecna. The storyline will be consolidated by the time jump and the fact that most of the season will take place in Hawkins and the Upside Down, as disclosed by the Duffer Brothers. The writers want to go into the backstory of the Upside Down and answer persistent Season 1 questions.

The Duffer Brothers have a strong idea of how the season will conclude, expecting that it will be gratifying for the tale even though they haven't fully developed the season.

Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, has expressed excitement about the new season and complimented the conclusion of Will's character development. Schnapp came out as gay and said that playing Will had a big part in helping him embrace who he was. The fifth season will have a major emphasis on Will's emotional journey and self-discovery.

Mike's actor, Finn Wolfhard, expressed appreciation for Schnapp's decision to come out publicly and predicted that Mike would understand Will's feelings. Fans are excited to see how Season 5 plays out as it attempts to give each character a fitting conclusion.

The Duffer Brothers claim that season five of the series will be the last. However, the series hasn't yet completed the development phase, as the writing began recently due to a series of strikes. Firstly, the WGA and then the SAG-AFTRA strikes delayed it by months. But, as the outline was ready, according to Duffer Brothers, it wouldn't take much time to make it up to it. Regardless, the estimated time for the release of Stranger Things 5 is around mid-2025.

The Duffers Brothers claim that the season five finale will be, albeit not quite as long as the fourth season. However, it will go quickly. They remark that season five will begin immediately and make a joke about the finale having "eight endings."
