Hershy Schwartz, a New York native living in Florida for over a decade, was found shot to death inside his car in the parking lot of a Wendy's at 25 Northeast 167 Street on February 19, 2023. Three months after the incident, at a news conference on Thursday, May 18, North Miami Beach Police officials announced that a suspect identified as, Louis Antuwn Redmon, 23, was arrested in connection to the victim's death.

Redmon is accused of shooting Hershy Schwartz, 39, during a carjacking attempt about a week before the victim’s wedding. As per WPLG, Redmon, a convicted felon, was charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, armed carjacking and possession of a weapon.

Multiple reports stated that months before the incident, Redmon had been released from a state prison in September 2022 after serving a three-year sentence for possession of a firearm.

As per the arrest affidavit cited by WPLG, on the day of the shooting, a surveillance video in the area showed Redmon looking into Schwartz’s vehicle in the parking lot of a Wendy’s. Redmon, a native of Jacksonville, was captured opening the SUV’s door and struggling with the victim before opening fire at the scene.

Police said that Redmon’s former girlfriend and her son were also behind bars after they were found aiding the suspect. Redmon reportedly texted the duo using the victim’s phone following the incident.

Hershy Schwartz's fiancee speaks out after police announced the arrest of the suspect

As per NBC Miami, Hershy Schwartz, a pillar of his Orthodox Jewish community in North Miami Beach, was reportedly a week away from getting married to Rosie Brustowsky when he was gunned down by the suspect.

Shortly after police announced the arrest, Rosie Brustowsky, issued a statement noting that while it was gratifying to know that the person responsible for her fiance's death was behind bars, the knowledge still doesn’t “bring him back.”

"It's comforting to know that the person who did this is not out on the streets anymore. That doesn't bring him back."

Brustowsky, who was reportedly counting down the days to her wedding alongside the victim, briefly recounted the dreadful scene after learning her fiancee was dead. She said:

"That was supposed to be the most incredible week of my life. And instead, we were mourning."

She added:

"Looking back, I was counting down to the worst day of my life."

As per WPLG, Schwartz, a native of Rockland County in New York, worked as a first responder for the William P. Faist Volunteer Ambulance in Chestnut Ridge, and the Brewer Fire Engine Company No.1 in Monsey, before moving to Florida.

NBC Miami reported in February, a friend identified as Yehuda Kaploun described Hershy Schwartz as a buoyant individual with a sunny disposition towards life.

"Hershey was the guy who looked forward to the holidays, was somewhat flamboyant in the sense he would wear different colored shirts to come into the synagogue. He just brought a smile to the face."

Court documents stated Redmon was being held in prison without bond.
