Heart Radio Breakfast co-host Jamie Theakston took to his Instagram account on September 17, 2024, to reveal that he had been diagnosed with stage one laryngeal cancer. As he remained optimistic about his treatments, he added that Jason King and Amanda Holden will be taking over his show as he rests. The radio personality is married to Sophie Theakston, and the duo are parents to two sons. After the news, Sophie took to social media to support her husband, and said: "My man #wegotthis".
In his Instagram post, Jamie Theakston revealed that a lesion was removed from his vocal cords. Speaking about the cancer, he said:
“I have cancer… but cancer doesn’t have me! The prognosis is very positive and I’m hoping to be back with you in October.”
The 53-year-old also added that he has been advised to give his voice a rest. Jamie Theakston said:
“Huge thanks to them [JK and Amanda] and all the Global Family who have been unbelievably supportive. Be thankful for this day, and when I see you next, I’ll have a great story to tell”
Amanda Holden, Jamie's co-host, also discussed his cancer diagnosis on the show. She revealed that he had an “amazing team who are going to get this sorted.” She revealed that Jamie Theakston wanted them to:
“Hold the fort, and he has told us that the show must go on, and absolutely, that’s what we are going to do. We are going to do him proud, him and Sophie and the boys, they’re listening at home, and I know that after this announcement, all of you listening as well are going to be sending your best wishes to our king.”
Sophie and Jamie Theakston got married in 2007
Sophie and Jamie Theakston met at the 2005 Oscars when the former was the manager of a private member’s only club in Soho, London. Now she is a jewelry designer and the founder of Sophie Theakston Jewellery. As per the store’s official website, she studied jewelry design and making. She has reportedly been designing jewelry for over a decade now. She revealed on her official website:
“Having been around the world of jewelry all my life, I have always been fascinated by how women wear their pieces—what drives their choices and what is says about them. So many stories are held in the jewels we wear; sentimental connections with people and memories.”
The couple got engaged while on holiday in Paris. They proceeded to get married in a Ditchling, East Sussex village church where guests included TV personality David Walliams, radio presenter Chris Evans, and former England striker and Arsenal athlete Ian Wright, among others.
Speaking about Jamie Theakston in an interview with Professional Jeweller and what made her laugh, Sophie said:
“My husband, every day. And usually something unrepeatable.”
The couple are parents to two sons, Kit and Sidney. The couple have kept their private lives off of social media, with Sophie also making her Instagram account private recently. However, in 2019, Jamie took to Instagram to share an image of himself enjoying a vacation at the Six Senses Laamu with his sons.
Speaking about her family life, Sophie said on Heart Breakfast:
“I have a very considerate and generally lovely husband who is usually home by lunchtime after a VERY early start, and he is brilliant at helping with school runs and sports matches if I have something that means I can’t do it.”
She also revealed that Jamie was always hands on in the house with a “bear hug” and “sound advice.”
According to the Cleveland Clinic, laryngeal cancer affects the larynx, or voice box. Symptoms of the disease can include a soar throat, a cough that will not go away, and voice changes that include hoarseness. Treatments often include surgery that removes a part or all of the larynx.
