After the Presidential debate, a claim emerged online that Kamala Harris and ABC journalist Linsey Davis are sorority sisters, both being former members of all-Black Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated (AKA). In the wake of this revelation, conservatives are now claiming that the latter showed bias during September 10’s presidential debate which she moderated, citing conflicts of interest.
Social media users have been alleging that Linsey Davis went easy on her “sorority sister” Kamala Harris while going hard on and constantly fact-checking Donald Trump. Meanwhile, liberals have pointed out that Davis and Harris attended two different universities many years apart, and thus the accusations were unfounded.
While Kamala became an AKA member when she attended Howard University, Washington from where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986, Linsey became an AKA sister over a decade later when she pursued a psychology degree from the University of Virginia and graduated in 1999.
The internet has been having varied reactions to the sorority sisters' claims. For instance, conservative political commentator Joey Mannarino commented on Daily Wire correspondent Bree A Dail’s post accusing Linsey Davis of being partial towards Kamala Harris during the debate, agreeing to the same.
“WOW! This is wild and should have been disclosed! She helped out her sister,” Joey wrote.
Several others joined the conversation and shared similar opinions calling out ABC, Linsey Davis, and Kamala Harris for an alleged unfair practice.
“WTF? ABC Debate ‘moderator’ Linsey Davis just HAPPENS to be a sorority sister of Kamala Harris at AKA. Why are we JUST NOW finding this out? WHO ALLOWED THIS TO HAPPEN?” a person asked.
“This certainly gives the 'conspiracy theory' a little more credibility to the idea that KH may have been allowed an earpiece,” wrote another.
“Once you are in the AKA sorority, you are in for life. Whether you are 50 or 20 years old, you have a bond that is unbreakable. This was low, even for Kamala,” a user wrote.
Some even alleged that Kamala Harris and Linsey Davis were family friends and the latter introduced the former to her husband Doug Emhoff.
“Yes… and they are still the best of friends. Lindsey introduced Kamala to her husband Doug,” an individual wrote.
“She actually set up Kamala and Doug on a blind date. She and Kamala are really good friends,” wrote another individual.
Meanwhile, others pointed out that AKA comprises thousands of members who have joined over the years, making it unlikely that Kamala Harris and Linsey Davis knew each other from before, or interfered with the sanctity of the presidential debate.
“Good god this is ridiculous. They’re 13 years apart and didn’t even attend the same school. Revisit your understanding of conflicts of interest,” a netizen wrote.
“This is absurd and misleading. AKA is a national sorority with over 360,000 living members. Kamala Harris is 60 and attended Howard, while Linsey Davis is 47 and attended UVA. There is no evidence they have any personal relationship. Your boy lost fair and square,” one netizen wrote.
“Harris is 13 years older than Davis. Davis went to UVA and NYU. Harris went to Howard and UC Hastings. The Sorority has had 360,000 members,” wrote another.
"How is it a conflict of interest or biased to ask questions? Doesn’t matter if they were mother and daughter, Linsey Davis wasn’t making any profound decisions. Fake outrage is exhausting," a user shared.
Neither Linsey Davis nor Kamala Harris or her campaign has addressed the claims. However, it is noteworthy, that the duo met at least once before the recent presidential debate during a 2023 one-on-one interview by ABC.
However, an old video has surfaced where Linsey once spoke about sharing the same sorority with Kamala.
“Pearls are a symbol of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority incorporated which she (Kamala) pledged while she was at Howard University… it is symbolic of unity and sisterhood,” Davis noted.
Exploring Linsey Davis’ role during the ABC presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump
During the Presidential debate organized by ABC, Linsey Davis and David Muir from the network acted as moderators. In the wake of it, both were called out for repeatedly interrupting and correcting Donald Trump, while staying allegedly quite silent during Kamala Harris’ speeches.
For instance, 46-year-old Davis fact-checked the former President when he claimed that doctors in certain states were still allowing abortion after birth.
“There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it’s born,” Linsey noted on stage.
However, conservatives later pointed out at least six states and the District of Columbia currently do not have a ban on the medical procedure, thus, inviting criticism of Davis’ way.
Meanwhile, when Harris stated that police were killed in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot seemingly orchestrated by her opponent, or that the billionaire had prevented access to IVF treatments, both Davis and Muir were blamed for allegedly allowing her to “stretch” the truth and not fact-checking.
Amid this, Donald Trump shared similar claims and told Fox News’ Fox & Friends during a telephonic interview that the debate was "three-on-one" and a “rigged deal” with the moderators “correcting” him over everything but not her.
“So many things I said were debunked like totally debunked. But she could say anything she wanted. My stuff was right, but they would correct you… I’ve had worse odds before, but never so obvious,” Trump added.
The 78-year-old further slammed ABC for being “dishonest” and demanded that their “license” be taken away for showing bias. He wrapped up by claiming he was “proud” of himself to have “won by a lot” and claimed to have done a “great job.” The ex-president also responded to the Democrat’s request for another debate, saying he was “less inclined” to do so as he already won and made his points.
