WWE Women's Quarterly Report Card

How have the women of WWE fared in the first quarter of 2018?

Wrestling is a difficult sport to rate objectively because it is a scripted athletic drama.

However, there are ways by which the overall success of any given wrestler can be judged with a measure of objectivity. By breaking down the elements of what constitutes a 'good run,' we can arrive at a conclusion about the overall status of the said wrestler with a good degree of clarity and accuracy.

Quarterly reports are important in many business ventures, as they are a good indicator of the overall success or failure of the business. That can apply to pro wrestling as well, where you can see the full data from four months and draw a conclusion about where the wrestler is at and where they are likely to go from here.

The Women of WWE will be judged on the following criteria. )

Wins/losses (booking.): Even in a scripted sport, wins and losses matter. A wrestler's win/loss rate is a good indicator of their success over the quarter.

Popularity: In the case of babyface wrestlers, this is how much the crowd cheers. In the case of a heel, it's how much they are booed. Whichever side of the fence the wrestler belongs on, this criteria relates to how over they are with the crowd.

Championships: Like a good win record, championships indicate the amount of success a wrestler is having by virtue of how much the company invests in her.

Crossover Appeal: Are people outside of wrestling fandom likely to know the wrestler? Also relevant is how much of a presence/following the wrestler has on social media sites like Twitter.

Here are the WWE women and their grades, in no particular order.

Alexa Bliss

The Pint-sized terror of the women's division has truly claimed her spot in WWE. How has 2018 treated her so far?

Wins/losses: With five wins and ten losses, Alexa doesn't score high in this category, but it could be a lot worse. Grade: D

Popularity: Little Miss Bliss is perfectly over with the WWE audience in her heel role, getting an apropos amount of boos. She is also credible in a championship role. Grade: A

Championships: Bliss held the Raw women's championship for most of the year before losing it to Nia Jax at Wrestlemania. Grade: A

Crossover Appeal: From her appearances on Total Divas to a strong social media presence, Alexa is more recognizable than many of her ilk. Grade: B

Overall Grade: B Alexa Bliss is firing on all cylinders and had a good start to 2018.

Asuka

Enter caption

The Empress of Tomorrow may have suffered a setback at Wrestlemania, but she continues to be one of the most impressive talents in the world. How has she fared in 2018?

Wins/Losses: With 18 wins and only two losses, Asuka is outstanding in this category. Grade: A+

Championships: Asuka has yet to hold any gold in 2018, but she did challenge for the Smackdown championship on the grandest stage of them all. Grade: C

Popularity: Asuka remains one of the most compelling characters on WWE television. Grade: A

Crossover Appeal: From her racy videos from Japan to her adequate social media game, Asuka scores well enough in this regard. Grade: B

Overall Grade: B+ Asuka is doing quite well in the first quarter, but one would expect her to be having an even better year than she is having.

Bayley

The irrepressible Bayley continues to liver her dream of being a WWE superstar. How has her first quarter of 2018 been?

Wins/Losses: Ten wins and seven losses give Bayley an above average record. Grade: B

Popularity: Despite some heelish leanings recently, Bayley remains one of the most celebrated superstars on the WWE's roster, male or female. Grade: A+

Championships: While she held no titles, Bayley was involved in two championship matches, one of which was the history-making first ever women's elimination chamber. Grade: C

Crossover Appeal: Bayley spends some time on social media but lacks cross-media appeal, and most folks outside of wrestling have no idea who she is. Grade: D

Overall Grade: C+ Bayley's doing okay in the first quarter, but she isn't having the stellar run most predicted for her during her NXT days.

Becky Lynch

The Lass Kicker continues to make her presence felt in the women's division. Here's how she has fared in 2018 so far.

Wins/Losses: With eight wins and four losses, Lynch is doing quite well. Grade: A

Popularity: While moreover with the internet fandom than the general WWE viewer, Lynch still gets a great response. Grade: B

Championships: Unfortunately, she had no title shots and held no gold for 2018 so far. Grade: F

Crossover Appeal: Lynch is a wrestler first and foremost, and tends to eschew a lot of the other forms of media that might get her more attention, though she is quite photogenic. Grade: C

Overall Grade: C Lynch isn't doing badly, but she isn't doing great, either. She needs a championship shot or run to really get her career going for the rest of 2018.

Billie Kay

The Acid Tongued Aussie recently made the jump from NXT to the main roster. How has her 2018 been so far?

Wins/Losses: Two wins, nine losses. Ouch. Grade: D

Popularity: Billie Kay is an attractive woman AND a heel, and manages to pull it off. Grade: B

Championships: Bad news for Kay, because she had no title shots and held no championships for 2018's first quarter. Grade: F

Crossover Appeal: Outside of Australia, not many know her beyond wrestling fans, though she makes an effort to stay active on social media. Grade: C

Overall Grade: D Kay needs more wins and a run at the belt, or to hold one, in order to kick-start her main roster career.

Carmella

The fabulous one held on to the Money in the Bank for a long, long time before cashing it in successfully.

Wins/Losses: With three wins and four losses, Carmella scores low in this category: Grade: D

Popularity: Carmella has struggled to get over in the talent-laden women's division, but seems to have made a breakthrough since capturing the Smackdown women's title. Grade: C

Championships: Carmella holds the Smackdown Women's title as of this writing, which can only result in one grade: Grade: A

Crossover Appeal: Carmella almost disappeared from WWE programming for a long stretch, and doesn't take advantage of social media like she should. Grade: D

Overall Grade: D+ Though things have turned around for her recently, most of Carmella's 2018 was less than inspiring.

Charlotte Flair

The Queen of women's wrestling continues to impress every time she 'walks that aisle.'

Wins/Losses: Eight wins and only four losses give Charlotte top marks in this category. Grade: A

Popularity: Charlotte is definitely over with the fans, though she seems to perform better as a babyface. Grade: A

Championships: Charlotte spent most of the year as the Smackdown Women's champion, though she lost it recently. Grade: A

Crossover Appeal: Charlotte focuses on wrestling rather than Total Divas appearances or spending a lot of time on social media, and few outside of wrestling know who she is. Grade: D

Overall Grade: A- Charlotte is right at the level she needs to be, but a little stronger cross-media presence wouldn't hurt her.

Dana Brooke

The former fitness model is having a tough time getting her career off the ground.

Wins/Losses: Two wins and only one loss is a good average, but her lack of in-ring time lowers her grade a bit: Grade: B-

Popularity: The fans don't have much of a reaction for Brooke, and she barely raises an eyebrow in her role for Titus Worldwide. Grade: D

Championships: No title shots, no title wins. Grade: F

Crossover Appeal: Brooke isn't well known outside of wrestling circles, and doesn't have a strong social media game. Grade: D

Overall Grade: D+ Dana Brooke needs to make some changes if she wants her 2018 to improve.

Ember Moon

Ember Moon's exciting style has earned her a spot on the main roster. How has her 2018 been so far?

Wins/Losses: With a staggering 23 wins and only 4 losses, the workhorse Ember Moon gets top marks. Grade: A

Popularity: Ember Moon dazzles and impresses the WWE fans, as well she should. Grade: A

Championships: Moon held the NXT women's championship for most of 2018 before losing it to Shayna Bayzler. Grade: A

Crossover Appeal: Wrestling comes first for Moon, who doesn't spend much time on Social Media, and few outside of the business recognize her. Grade: D

Overall Grade: A Ember Moon is flying as high as her namesake in 2018.

Liv Morgan

The Riott Squad member recently joined the main roster. How has she fared in 2018?

Win/Losses: Four wins and three losses put her above average. Grade: B

Popularity: Liv is the least over member of Riott Squad, lacking Ruby Riott's presence or Sarah Logan's technical ability, and seems to get lost in the shuffle a bit. Grade: C

Championships: No reigns and no shots Grade: F

Crossover Appeal: Liv has little impact in social media circles, and is almost unheard of outside of wrestling. Grade: F

Overall Grade: D+ Liv Morgan is struggling to find her niche, and perhaps splitting from Riott Squad might give her more time to shine on her own.

Mandy Rose

Another standout fitness star, Mandy Rose is seen by some as the replacement for Dana Brooke, who has been less than impressive.

Wins/Losses: Three wins and nine losses isn't a great record. Grade: D

Popularity: Mandy is over with certain segments of the crowd, for obvious reasons, but has yet to really win over the majority of the audience Grade: C

Championships: No reigns, but she was in the historic women's elimination chamber match for the title. Grade: C

Crossover Appeal: Mandy does well in her modeling gigs, but is still not likely to be recognized outside of wrestling. Grade: D

Overall Grade: C- With her relative inexperience, Mandy is actually performing above par at this stage of her career.

Mickie James

Veteran wrestler Mickie James continues to impress even decades into her career.

Wins/Losses: Five wins and ten losses hurt her in this category. Grade: D

Popularity: Many fans have watched her for so long that they will always be supporters, and her technical skill has won over many other converts. Grade: A

Championships: James was a participant in the Elimination Chamber match, though she did not win any titles. Grade: C

Crossover Appeal: From her modeling work to her country albums, Mickie scores well in this category. Grade: B

Overall Grade: C While James is always impressive in the ring, she really should be in the title picture at this stage of her career.

Naomi

The glowing one has truly come into her own at this stage of her career.

Wins/Losses: Eight wins and four losses gives her a good score. Grade: A

Popularity: Naomi generates a lot of excitement with her poise and athletic ability. Grade: A

Championships: Unfortunately, Naomi was not in the title picture for the first quarter of 2018 at all. Grade: F

Crossover Appeal: With her Total Divas appearances and strong social media presence, Naomi scores great in this regard. Grade: A

Overall Grade: A- Naomi is doing quite well, but could use some gold around her waist.

Natalya Neidhart

The second generation star is a staple of the WWE women's division.

Wins/Losses: Four wins and eight losses isn't the best record. Grade: D

Popularity: Nattie is a beloved fixture on WWE television. Grade: A

Championships: Natalya was not in the title picture for 2018 so far. Grade: F

Crossover Appeal: Between Total Divas and her social media presence, Natalya is riding high. Grade: B

Overall Grade: C Natalya isn't doing badly, but she's capable of so much more.

Nia Jax

Nia Jax isn't like most girls, and thank goodness for that.

Wins/Losses: Five wins, eight losses is just a little sub-par. Grade: C-

Popularity: Jax is over with the WWE audience whether working as face or heel. Grade: A

Championships: Jax captured the Raw women's title at Wrestlemania this year. Grade: A

Crossover Appeal: From her strong social media presence to Total Divas, Jax is on fire. Grade: A

Overall Grade: A. Jax is at the top of her game, as one would expect of a champion.

Peyton Royce

The other half of the IIconics also received the call up to the main roster.

Wins/Losses: Four wins and seven losses is a little under par. Grade: C-

Popularity: Royce plays her heelish role well, and gets a decent reaction from the WWE crowd. Grade: B

Championships: 0 title reigns, and 0 chances. Grade: F

Crossover Appeal: Some middling social media presence doesn't make up for the fact most outside of wrestling are not likely to recognize her. Grade: D

Overall Grade: C Royce isn't doing badly, but could perform much better.

Ruby

Riott

The leader of Riott Squad is one of the most unique competitors in WWE right now.

Wins/Losses: Six wins, five losses is just above average. Grade: B

Popularity: Riott is over as a heel or a face, but seems to relish the heel role. Grade: B

Championships: Riott did receive an unsuccessful shot at the Smackdown women's championship. Grade: C

Crossover Appeal: The well-traveled Riott has fans in all corners of the globe, but is unlikely to be known by non-wrestling fans. Grade: C

Overall Grade: B Riott is doing quite well in her new role on the main roster.

Sarah Logan

The Riott Squad member has been impressive, perhaps the most technically skilled of the three.

Wins/Losses: Four wins and only two losses is a decent record, but she needs more in-ring time for a better grade. Grade: B

Popularity: Logan is over with the internet crowd, but being in Riott Squad doesn't do much for her in this regard, as she is seen as second banana to Ruby. Grade: C

Championships: Again, being in Riott squad hurts her, because the title shots are going to the stable leader and not her. Grade: F

Crossover Appeal: Logan has her fans all over the world, but lacks a strong social media component. Grade: D

Overall Grade: C- Logan could be doing worse; she's on the main roster of the biggest company on the planet, but given her technical acumen she should be doing much better.

Sasha Banks

Enter caption

The Legit Boss continues her roll in WWE.

Wins/Losses: Banks racked up a lot of ring time, with seven wins and eleven losses. Grade: C

Popularity: Banks has been straddling the heel/face fence for a while now, but seems to be more over as a heel. Grade: B

Championships: Banks challenged for the title at Elimination Chamber. Grade: C

Crossover Appeal: From her famous cousin to her self-promotion on social media, Banks gets a good grade here. Grade: B

Overall Grade: B- Banks isn't mired in the bottom of the card, but she needs to get back into the title picture and some wins to turn 2018 into her year.

Sonya Deville

Sonya Deville would rather you paid more attention to her MMA skills and strong ring poise than her sexuality, though the latter is a matter of public record.

Wins/Losses: Three wins and ten losses is not a great record, but she's at least logged in a lot of ring time. Grade: D

Popularity: Sonya has a great look and exciting ring style, but doesn't make the best heel. Grade: C

Championships: Sonya participated in the Elimination Chamber match. Grade: C

Crossover Appeal: Deville works the social media angle well, and MMA fans might know of her. Grade: B

Overall Grade: C Sonya is struggling a bit since Paige was forced to retire, breaking up their Absolution stable, but could turn things around in the rest of 2018.

Conclusion: Charlotte at the top

Currently, Charlotte Flair earns the top marks for the WWE women's division.

Her dominance of the field is well-deserved, and she suits her role as champion well.

As for the lowest scoring wrestler, Dana Brooke, there's still hope she can turn things around for the rest of 2018.
