Originally known as TNA (Total Non-Stop Action) or TNA Wrestling, Impact Wrestling is a pro-wrestling company that came into existence in 2002.
Founded Jeff Jarrett and Jerry Jarrett in Nashville, Tennessee, the promotion was called NWA: Total Nonstop Action (NWA-TNA) or TNA Wrestling and was associated with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) during the initial period. Even though the NWA tag was removed in 2004, TNA Wrestling still used the NWA Heavyweight Championship as it's top belt till 2007, when it created TNA World Championship with Kurt Angle as the first ever TNA (Impact Wrestling) Champion.
Impact Wrestling saw many Stallworths like Angle, Sting, RVD and AJ Styles win the top prize in Impact Wrestling.
The promotion was purchased by Anthem at the beginning of 2017, and it was renamed Impact Wrestling after its main television series.
Impact Wrestling was considered the second major pr-wrestling promotion behind WWE up untill 2015, when Ring of Honor took the lead from Impact Wrestling.
After WCW was purchased by WWE in 2001, WWE was left with no major competition and that is when Jeff Jarrett, Jerry Jarrett, and Bob Ryder came up with the idea to create a new promotion. The company put on its first show on June 19, 2002, which went smoothly after facing some hiccups.
Panda Energy purchased a controlling interest (72%) of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling in October 2002.
In May 2004, Impact Wrestling introduced a television program, Impact! which was produced at Soundstage 21 at Universal Studios Florida and broadcast on Fox Sports. The transition included the use of a six-sided wrestling ring and had a more sports-like style than the sports entertainment style of WWE.
The golden era for Impact Wrestling was during 2005 - 2010 when guys like AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, Kurt Angle, and Samoa Joe were at the helm. These men brought in a whole audience who were interested in great in-ring action instead of the soap opera-like style of WWE.
The X-Division was also at its peak and amazing performers were laying everything on the line to put on great shows.
In 2010 Impact Wrestling hired Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff, who made quite a few changes to the brand. They hired a lot of ex-WWE stars and moved the show to a more WCW style of storytelling - which was hated by most TNA fans.
On April 27, 2015, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan joined Impact Wrestling as senior producer of creative and talent development. However, relations with Corgan soured later and he left the company.
In December 2017, Anthem announced the hiring of Don Callis and Scott D'Amore as Executive Vice Presidents to take charge of Impact Wrestling’s day-to-day operations starting in January of the next year.
Currently, Impact Wrestling has tie-ups with various other promotions such as Lucha Underground and have constant talent exchanges.
