It is a known fact that Manchester United is one of the most successful clubs in the world and have a fan base that spreads over all the continents. The Old Trafford outfit has won more than 60 trophies since its foundation in 1878 and currently has more English titles than any other team. However the clubs phenomenal success cannot just be owed to the iconic players who have put on the famous red shirt. #5 Walt Crickmer

Most of you may not be familiar with Crickmer but don’t take it hard on yourself as the Englishman managed United in the early ‘30s and ‘40s. United owe a very big debt to Crickmer as he was one of the main architects of their now famous youth system. Crickmer also served as the club secretary for 32 long years before he tragically passed away in the “Munich air disaster”.

#4 Tommy Docherty

Docherty is still famous among Manchester United fans for his extramarital affair with a wife one of the club’s physiotherapists. However, he still managed to lead United to one FA Cup and one Second Division title. Docherty succeeded in leading Manchester United back to the top flight, but was famously sacked by the club when his affair came to light.

United fans are indebted to Atknison too, as he gave the club some much needed silverware during the early ‘80s. The Scouser led United to 1 Community Shield and 2 FA Cups before he lost his job to Sir Alex Ferguson in 1986. Although some United fans despise Atkinson due to him selling fan favourite Mark Hughes to Barcelona, nobody can take the success he achieved at United away from him.

The iconic Scot led United to an astonishing 38 trophies and successfully knocked Liverpool off their perch. Sir Alex is credited with nurturing another talented group of United players fondly known as Fergies Fledglings and is credited with bringing Cristiano Ronaldo to the attention of the world. Sir Alex managed Manchester United for 26 long years before finally calling time on his illustrious career in 2013.

The legendary Scottish manager was in charge of Manchester United for 24 long years and transformed them from a losing side to one of the top teams in Europe. Sir Matt is famous for nurturing a talented group of young players that were famously called the Busby Babes and for discovering United legends like Denis Law and George Best. The Scot led United to 13 trophies, including the European Cup, which they won in 1968. It is safe to say that Sir Matt deserves to be leading all the rest in the best United managers list.
