#5 Bruce Grobbelaar

The iconic goalkeeper is almost always left out of the top five or even top ten lists of best Liverpool players ever which is extremely shocking as he was a key part of the team for over a decade.

Grobbelaar performed brilliantly between the sticks and won 6 First Divisions, 3 FA Cups, 3 League Cups and 1 European Cup in his 628 appearances for the Merseyside club.

The shot stopper endeared himself to the Liverpool faithful with his brilliant theatrics in goal most notably in the 1984 European Cup final against Roma where he performed the “spaghetti legs” during the penalty shoot out.

Jerzy Dudek copied Grobbelaar’s “spaghetti legs” goalkeeping style during the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan. Few goalkeepers performed as well as Grobbelaar in the 1980s.

#4 Alan Hansen

The Scot was an excellent servant for Liverpool and was with them for over two decades. Hansen was a remarkable centre back and was an important part of the Liverpool teams that won 8 First Division titles, 2 FA Cups, 4 League Cups and 3 European Cups.

The defender also holds the record for being the first outfield player to win English league titles over three different decades. Hansen was Liverpool’s rock at the back for 15 years and was heavily used in every season except the 1988-1989 campaign where he was restricted to just 8 appearances due to injury.

Every young Liverpool defender dreams to be like Hansen who won everything there was to win at club level.

#3 Ian Rush

Liverpool fans will always have a place in their heart for Rushie who is remembered for his phenomenal goals as well as his famous moustache.

Bob Paisley, the Reds’ manager at that time signed Rush as a teenager for £300,000 which was a record back then. The Welshman scored 346 goals in 660 appearances for Liverpool making him their all time top scorer.

During his remarkable Liverpool career Rush won 5 First Division titles, 3 FA Cups, 5 League Cups, and 2 European Cups. His remarkable goalscoring record is likely to remain unbroken for a long, long time.

#2 Michael Owen

Many folks would have preferred Kenny Dalglish or Ian Rush to occupy this spot but they weren’t home grown talents and Owen was. The Englishman was simply phenomenal as a teenager and was popularly known as the “boy wonder” by the Anfield faithful due to his extraordinary talent.

He made his England senior debut at the tender age of 18 and scored a memorable goal against Argentina in the ’98 World Cup. Owen scored 158 goals in just 279 appearances during his time at Liverpool and scored or created chances in almost every game he played in.

The former England international was Liverpool’s top scorer in every season before his move to Real Madrid. Before his Los Blancos move Owen won 1 FA Cup, 2 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup and 1 UEFA Super Cup during his time as a Red.

Unfortunately he never won the Premier League at Liverpool but did manage to lift it during his time as a Manchester United player. I’m sure the Kopites still have fond memories of the boy wonder and he will always be included on every fan's “Best Liverpool Players Ever” list.

#1 Steven Gerrard

No other player could have occupied the number one spot on this list. Steven Gerrard will always be remembered by the Anfield faithful due to him being a home grown talent and his remarkable career.

Captain Fantastic has netted more than 150 goals in his career and has won 1 Champions League, 2 Community Shields, 2 FA Cups and 3 League Cups.

The only thing that has unfortunately eluded him so far is the Premier League but hopefully he will lift that before he hangs up his boots. It won’t be a shock if Liverpool retire the number 8 jersey once Gerrard retires.
