10 best video games based on Marvel characters

Sreeju

Marvel Comics and DC comics are what that defined our childhood. Though Marvel was then more known for Spiderman and Fantastic Four, with the recent successes of the movie outings of other Marvel characters like Iron Man, Captain America, X-Men, Thor and even the obscure Guardians of the Galaxy. It seems every character they own are hot properties. In the gaming world, though they haven’t achieved as much success as their DC counterparts, they still provided us with some enjoyable ventures.Presenting to you a list of ten games that makes every Marvelite (yup…that’s a term now…) proud.

#10 The Punisher

Premise: Based loosely on the 2004 film, Frank Castle is on his usual business – killing criminals and meting out brutal justice to all the wrong doers.

Another hero from The Marvel Universe that has been given the hard end of the stick. The Punisher is Marvel’s most grounded, most ruthless and most violent hero, so there is a lot of chance of kids not relating to him, unlike Iron Man and Spiderman.

That’s why the movies didn’t work out much as they would like. However, the video game based on this hero fares slightly better. Similar to Max Payne, in terms of gameplay, Punisher is at his ferocious best with the violent stunts ad smart quips. And, also you have other Marvel favorites like Iron Man and Nick Fury making short appearances.

#9 Captain America and the Avengers

Premise: Captain America and his 3-men army has to stop Red Kull and his minions before they launch their grand plans to take over the world. On the way, they also have to face some of their other nemeses, like Klaw, Crossbones, Ultron etc.

Captain America leads the pack of young heroes in this classic old style video game. The game follows the beat them up style, where you get to control The Cap himself, Hawkeye, Iron Man and Vision, while Namor and Quicksilver also make appearances. Play this one for nostalgia’s sake.

#8 Marvel Avengers Alliance

Premise: You join S.H.I.E.L.D. under the watchful eyes of badass Nick Fury, and Maria Hill. From there on, you get involved in a series of adventures all around the world, with your favorite Marvel heroes as company.

Developed after the popularity stakes of the movie franchise improved, this social game belongs to the RPG genre that you can play on Facebook. You begin off as a young man recruited newly under the Nick Fury led S.H.I.E.L.D. Don’t worry, you also get to play other favorites like Drax, Groot, Gambit and others

#7 Marvel Super Hero Squad

Premise: Doctor Doom has finally managed possession of the Infinity Sword, and now the Marvel heroes must try their best to take it away from him before he puts it to his nefarious needs.

This one appeals more to the kids, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying it out at least once. It features many of your Marvel heroes and villains, and visuals are kind of cutesy to give Lego series some kind of competition.

#6 The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

Premise: Bruce Banner has sent himself into exile, for finding a cure for his ‘green’ problem, before his friend Doc Samson tried to convince him to help him out. Though he refuses, he has to reluctantly come out due to the interference of the Abomination, and the General Ross’ army.

Hulk has been a kind of stepson for Marvel. Though he has been one of the most favorite superheroes in the comics, he could never do much in the movies, except for the Avengers movie. However, in this game, we love playing the big green guy, and do what he likes to do – smash everything! The plot is not so great, but who cares! We just love breaking things!!!

#5 Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes

Premise: A French Pirate realizes that the near annihilation of Earth can be traced to an evil being called Abyss. She summons the greatest superheroes on Earth to stop this being and save our planet. So clichéd!

MVC is a franchise that needs no introduction. Agreed, the best game is the Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, but I am kind of bored speaking about it every time I mention a fighting game. So I go to the next best title of the series, the quirkier, yet no less better number 2.

#4 X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Premise: It follows the plot of the movie, with an additional sub-plot where Sentinels are involved.

The movie was total s#!t! The game, maybe realizing it can sunk no further, actually surpasses the movie by miles, and is actually one of the best reviewed Marvel titles. The graphics are amazing while the gameplay is fluid, with some great stunts involved. Play this if you want to erase the memories of a bad movie experience.

#3 X-Men (1992 game)

Premise: X-men are doing what they are best at – stopping Magneto from annihilating mankind. From Sentinels, to Reavers to Hellfire Club to other stable of X-Men villains like Pyro, Wendigo, Blob etc., the heroes have to go through all obstacles to reach the mutant who can control metal.

I know the game is very dated compared to most of the other games in the list, but the fun of handling six X-men in one game, including fan-favorites like Wolverine and Nightcrawler is certainly no less deniable. Above all, there are a few unintentional comedic lines. Die X-chicken, die!!!!

#2 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2

Premise: Following the Civil War arc, the superheroes of America are facing a unique challenge when an superhero-related explosion in Stanford kills over 600 civilians, changing public’s perception towards superheroes. A Super-hero registristration act is passed, which further divides the heroes in two sides – the one supporting the act is led by Iron Man, while the side against is led by Captain America.

The best thing about the game is that it follows one of the greatest comic storylines ever. You get to use one of the largest Marvel roster, including playing Venom! Do I need to say anything more about this?

#1 Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

Premise: Spiderman has to deal with a new problem when several symbiotes are plaguing the Manhattan. Plus, you have cameos from Wolverine and Luke Cage.

This game had also topped the list of my previous article (best games of Spiderman), and though, I want to avoid repetition as much as I can, there is little I can do here. Spiderman is, after all, one of the most popular Marvel heroes, and apart from him, you also have Wolverine, Luke Cage, Moon Knight and Black Widow.

So this almost looks like a mini Avengers pack. Also, the game has the highest rating for any Marvel game ever released, so there’s it. I rest my case.
