Malaga 1-2 Real Madrid : Five Talking Points

Srihari

Goals from Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale were enough for Real Madrid to secure their sixth-straight away win and moved five points clear at the top of La Liga. Here are the major talking points from the game.

#1 Ronaldo shows another side of his game

With the goal scoring form that Cristiano Ronaldo is in, it looks as though he can do wrong and is certainly making a mockery of the records. If there was every any criticism of Ronaldo, it is the fact that he doesn't pass the ball. To be fair to the Portuguese forward, he has worked on it a lot over the past few years and the number of assists he gets each season is a testament to that.

Against Malaga, he showed just why he is regarded as the best player in the world. Although he didn't score, he assisted both goals and delivered a performance that not many would've expected from him.

Although he was unable to keep his record of scoring in every League game so far alive, he gave up goal scoring opportunities on more than one occasion in order to slip in a team mate and that certainly is ominous news for football clubs around Europe.

#2 Kameni doesn\'t deserve to be on the losing side

When you ask a kid on the street, what position you want to play, goalkeeper won't be the first answer. Partly because, not only is it a thankless job sometimes, it is one where mistakes are highlighted more than good performances.

But then there are days when you come up against a keeper who is hell bent on keeping a clean sheet. It is no exaggeration that without Carlos Kameni, the score line would've been nowhere near as close. The Cameroonian shot-stopper who is keeping World Cup sensation Guillerhmo Ochoa out of the starting line up put in a performance that was simply sublime to watch.

Although he conceded two goals, Kameni was without a doubt, the man of the match. Whether it was coming off his line quickly or collecting crosses calmly or just reflex saves, the Malaga keeper did everything that was asked of him and then some more.

#3 Real still have a few issues to sort out

Having given Iker Casillas the green light to continue as the No.1 for Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti wouldn't have been too pleased by the performance of the Spanish shot-stopper. Although he did make a couple of decent saves, he also spilled a couple of regulation shots and almost conceded a bizarre own goal.

In front of him, Sergio Ramos and Pepe had a pretty good game but once Dani Carvajal was substituted and Raphael Varane came in, the defence didn't look as solid. And up front, James Rodriguez looks like a square peg in a round hole.

Although he is technically brilliant, he doesn't have the pace to play on the break and is often dallying on the ball for far too long and isn't always picking the right option.

#4 Referee shows his immaturity

Refereeing performances in Spain often get a lot of stick from fans. But the truth is that sometimes it is very difficult for the officials to get things right, when you have players like Duda who go down every time as though they have been shot and home fans shouting for hand ball when it hits the back.

But referee Inaki Vicandi Garrido certainly didn't help his case in this game. Not only did he not book players when he had to and not give a penalty to Real Madrid when Sergio Ramos was clearly pulled down inside the box, he also gave unnecessary bookings and penalised legitimate challenges, which in the end resulting in a red card for Isco.

Garrido who is just 28, looked lost in this clash and it looks as though the Spanish FA who are trying to blood in younger officials need to look out for quality rather than quantity when it comes to choosing referees for games.

#5 How far can Real Madrid go?

Victory over Malaga was their 16th straight win in all competitions for Los Blancos, which is a club-record. While some are already claiming that the current Real Madrid side are the best in the club's history, the truth is that unless they win something this season, they will just be just another great Real Madrid side.

But one thing they can do is continue their current winning run and cement their position in the record books. The club's next three games are all at home and are all eminently winnable encounters. A win in the cup tie against third-division side Cornella, Celta Vigo in the League and Ludogorets in the Champions League would leave them with 19 wins, and from then on, anything is possible as long as they keep scoring goals and with Ronaldo around, that shouldn't be a problem.
