Top 5 Races of Mark Webber

Mark Webber was one of the greatest drivers’ of his era, who perhaps would have achieved even more if he had got into competitive teams earlier in his career. But still, there are a fair share of great races where his talent and skill were at full display. Here is a look at the five greatest ever drives of Mark Webber form my point of view.

#5 2003 Hungarian Grand Prix

Webber’s impressive fifth place finish at his first ever Grand Prix had impressed everyone. Thus, it came as no surprise when Webber moved up the grid by signing for Jaguar.

Webber qualified third on the grid. The race start was even better as he took second place, then he did a magnificent job of trying to hold on to his place as others passed him. Finally he finished the race in sixth place which was really remarkable given the uncompetitiveness of the car.

#4 2006 Monaco Grand Prix

Webber had got his first ever podium in Formula 1 at this circuit a year ago, he showed the world it wasn’t one-off as he drove brilliantly here.

Webber qualified a stunning second on the grid in an uncompetitive Williams. He then got a great start in the race and was in a fight for the lead with Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen, until his Cosworth engine expired and he had to give up. He would have gotten at least a podium if he had finished the race.

#3 2012 British Grand Prix

Webber’s final victory in Formula 1 is also perhaps one of his greatest ever. Since the 2011 season, Webber was consistently out qualified and outraced in most of the races by Sebastian Vettel. He turned the tables at the British Grand Prix was where he overtook Alonso with only three laps left.

#2 2010 Monaco Grand Prix

Although Webber had showed his prowess several times at the Monte Carlo Circuit, he wasn’t able to finish on top.

Webber got the pole position ahead of Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel. In the race, Webber didn’t let Vettel pass through, who in the end finished just a half a second behind him.

#1 2009 German Grand Prix

The 2009 German Grand Prix at Nurburgring will forever be etched as the race in which Webber got his first win.

In qualifying, Webber gave a stunning performance and got his first ever pole position. But at the start of the race, he had a slight collision with Barrichello, an incident for which he later suffered a drive through penalty.

After the penalty, Webber emerged eighth, but soon staged a great recovery through which he got his first ever win in Formula 1.
