Joshna Chinappa beats Yathreb Adel to enter quarterfinals of Qatar Classic

Joshna Chinappa’s fine run at the Qatar Classic continued on Monday as he progressed through to the quarterfinals of the tournament after beat Yathreb Adel of Egypt 16-14 11-8 11-8 in the second round.

After an extremely long opening sets due to several lets, the second and third sets proved to be much easier affairs for the Indian, who will play the winner of the match between Sarah-Jane Perry and Omneya Abdel Kawy in the last eight.

The opening game saw the Indian trail 2-6 at one points, before a surge of points brought the set back on level terms at 9-9 and then went on to win 7 out of the next 12 points to win 16-14.

The second set saw the Egyptian take a 6-3 lead before Joshna fought back very well to level the scores at 8-8 and then clinched the set by winning three straight points. A similar tale unfolded in the third set as Adel found herself 5-2 up but for the third time in the match the Indian fought her way back to seal the set 11-8 and progress through.

The 29-year-old Joshna must certainly be brimming with confidence, especially after defeating the top seed and World No.1 Raneem El Welily in the opening round on Saturday. She is currently the only Indian challenge left in the competition after both Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal were eliminated in the opening round.

Reacting to her victory, the Indian said expressed happiness and hoped to progress through further into the competition.

“Really pleased to be through to the quarters, hope to push on further in next round,” she said.
