This year has been a rollercoaster for Alijah Arenas. Over the first six months of 2025, he committed and signed with USC, lost the state finals, almost died in a car crash and graduated from high school. In an emotional Instagram post, his mom, Laura Govan, posted pictures with him and the rest of her side of the family.
"YOU ALREADY KNOW … 🖤 @alijah0arenas Nothing Like A Mothers LoVe … MySun My LoVe …. 🖤 & My Other Baby @_jaydennnn._," Govan wrote on Friday.
Arenas graduated from Chatsworth High School in California. He led the Chancellors to the CIF City Section final; however, they lost to Tajh Ariza and the Westchester Comets. He then led Chatsworth to the CIF Division II State Championships, but once again fell short in the finals.
While he failed to carry his team to a championship this year, he was named a McDonald's All-American, helping the West team win on April 1. However, he grabbed even more headlines when he crashed his Tesla Cybertruck into a tree in April, narrowly escaping death.
One of his rescuers broke one of the windows and pulled him out. Doctors had to place him in a medically induced coma, but he is now on his way to a full recovery.
Gilbert Arenas says Tesla Cybertruck allegedly malfunctioned during Alijah Arenas crash
Alijah Arenas' father, former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, claimed that the Tesla Cybertruck malfunctioned.
"The car malfunctioned on him," Gilbert said on May 20, via "All the Smoke" podcast. "The steering wheel went limp and ran him right into a tree. Once he got his personality back, which was once they got the drugs out of him, our jokes came back. Like, damn boy, you almost went extra crispy on me, man. You almost went extra crispy, dawg.
"He couldn't break the window. I seen that people were like, 'Oh, he fell asleep.' I'm looking at, he's on the phone with 911. I'm trying to get that call, he's on the phone with them for 10 minutes, so I know he was at least in the car for 10 minutes."
Alijah was released from the hospital on April 30, and is expected to still suit up for the USC Trojans next season.
