"It will be released in December" — South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae hints at Netflix's Squid Game season 2 premiere

On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, Business Insider reported that the South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae confirmed Squid Game's second season renewal. According to the statement he gave to the news agency, the series' second season will premiere around December of this year on the streaming platform Netflix. However, official confirmation from the platform or the series is still pending.

Here's the exact statement that Lee Jung-jae, a cast member of the series, gave Business Insider:

"It (Squid Game season 2) will be released in December."

Squid Game is a South Korean television series that was released in 2021. Right from its premiere, the show garnered a lot of attention for its unique and alluring plot. It revolved around a huge crowd of contestants who agreed to participate in a series of children's games for a handsome price.

However, the reality of the games the contestants play puts them in a life-or-death situation. Since the show ended on a cliffhanger without all its doors being closed, fans are excited to see what's in store for them.

Netflix's Squid Game premiered in 2021, starring several famous faces of the film industry, such as Lee Jung-jae, Jung Ho-yeon, Anupam Tripathi, Gong Yoo, Wi Ha-joon, and more. The show, though featuring hundreds of contestants, mainly revolved around a smaller group of contestants and their approaches to each game.

It narrates the lives of the contestants and the reason behind the extreme choices they make to win each game that they participate in. The show immediately became a viral sensation, which invited viewers outside the expected range of audience for Korean shows and films. It is considered one of the big breaks in the Korean TV series industry.

Therefore, its huge audience and thrilling plot naturally left people eagerly waiting for a renewal of a new season. After three long years, Squid Game fans have been elated by the news shared by the show's cast member, Lee Jung-jae. On May 15, Business Insider released an article updating the fans about the actor's insight about the show's renewal.

Though Netflix or other official platforms related to the South Korean TV series have not confirmed the news, since the information comes from a cast member, it's most likely expected to be true. On the other hand, Lee Jung-jae isn't the only one who spoke about the upcoming renewal of the Netflix series for a second season.

In April 2024, The Hollywood Reporter shared that the co-CEO of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, expressed that the second season can be expected in the second half of 2024. This piece of information was gained during the co-CEO's talk at the Netflix earnings call in April.


On the other hand, the South Korean actor, Lee Jung-jae also has another upcoming project. He is expected to star in the Star Wars movie, The Acolyte, and will also be taking one of the lead roles in the movie.
