The universe of Berk is back on the big screen in a new revamped manner as How to Train Your Dragon receives a live-action remake. Scheduled to open in theaters on June 13, 2025, the revamped take transposes the cherished Vikings and dragons tale to the big screen, supported by Universal Pictures and DreamWorks.
Directed by Dean DeBlois, director of the original animated trilogy, the live-action adaptation is set to capture the spirit of Cressida Cowell's beloved novel, but infuse it with fresh energy in the form of a new generation cast and realistic visuals.
The film recently premiered at CinemaCon to early acclaim and will reintroduce audiences to Hiccup, Astrid, and the island of Berk with a blend of fantasy adventure, coming-of-age tension, and emotional stakes.

1) Mason Thames as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III

Mason Thames is an American actor who gained recognition for playing the role of Finney Blake in The Black Phone (2021) alongside Ethan Hawke. He has also worked on Netflix comedy Incoming and will be featured in Regretting You and New Year's Rev.
Thames started working as an actor when he was 11 years old and toured as a ballet dancer before shifting to working in films. In this live-action adaptation, he plays the role of Hiccup, the resourceful and underappreciated son of Chief Stoick the Vast.
2) Nico Parker as Astrid Hofferson

Nico Parker is a British actress who appeared in Tim Burton's Dumbo (2019). She received widespread acclaim for playing Sarah Miller in HBO's The Last of Us (2023). Parker has also appeared in Suncoast and Poetic License, and was appointed Lancôme's youngest-ever Global Ambassador in 2024.
She plays Astrid, a fearless Viking-in-training and Hiccup's best friend and love interest, in the movie.
3) Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast

Gerard Butler is a Scottish actor known for his work in 300, Law Abiding Citizen, and The Phantom of the Opera. He provided the voice of Stoick the Vast in the original animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy.
Butler repraises his character in the live-action remake, taking on the gruff but doting Viking chief and Hiccup's father. His return provides continuity and recognition to the new adaptation.
4) Nick Frost as Gobber the Belch

Nick Frost is a British comedian and actor who has worked with Simon Pegg on Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End. He appeared in the Paul and TV series Into the Badlands.

Bronwyn James is a British actress best known for her appearances on Harlots, The Dig, and Netflix's Lockwood & Co. She portrays Ruffnut, the half of the troublesome Thorston twins who are destructive, competitive, and inseparable.
Harry Trevaldwyn is a comedian and writer, best known for Ten Percent and the Netflix movie The Bubble. He stars as Tuffnut, Ruffnut's equally deranged twin brother, and provides absurd humor and crazed energy to the Viking youth crew.
Fierce Ruth Codd is an Irish television and film actress who gained recognition for her breakout performance in Mike Flanagan's The Midnight Club (2022). She made a subsequent appearance in The Fall of the House of Usher. She features as Phlegma, a firm but caring member of the Viking society who closely collaborates with dragons and assists the young Vikings.
What is How to Train Your Dragon about?
Set in the stormy island of Berk, the movie traces the story of Hiccup, a reluctant teenager who's more interested in inventing than fighting. In a village where killing dragons is a rite of passage, Hiccup upsets tradition when he befriends Toothless, a rare and formidable Night Fury.
As they become closer, they defy centuries of Vikings-dragons feud and challenge what constitutes strength on the island.
