As the rap battle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake reached a dramatic pause months ago, the latter is now taking legal action against Universal Music Group. The Canadian rapper alleged that the organization conspired using Spotify to inflate the popularity of K. Dot’s Not Like Us diss track against Drizzy. Netizens have since taken to social media to react to the legal move.
Drake’s Frozen Moments LLC filed the pre-action petition on Monday, November 25, in New York Supreme Court. Allegations included accusing UMG and Spotify of violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act and using deceptive business tactics and false advertising through bots and payola. As per Variety, the petition read:
“UMG did not rely on chance, or even ordinary business practices. It instead launched a campaign to manipulate and saturate services and airwaves.”
Drizzy also accused the NFR Podcast of taking money to promote Not LIke Us. The petitioner also alleged that UMG paid Apple to have the Siri voice assistant “purposely misdirect users” to the song.
The legal filing also alleged that Champagne Papi had raised the issue with UMG before taking matters to court; however, the company had “no interest in taking responsibility for its misconduct.” They also allegedly tried to hide their wrongdoing by firing employees loyal to Drake.
The petition also claimed that UMG insisted that Drizzy sues Lamar instead of the label.
Netizens relentlessly trolled Drake after news of the legal action made headlines. One netizen said:
Several others shared similar memes on X, with some reading:
“The end of Drake is upon us…. I feel it in the air,” an X user said.
“This has truly been an incredible year to be a drake hater,” another platform user commented.
“It’s been 7 months bro you lost just give up,” another netizen commented.
As Drizzy takes legal action against the music label which represents both the artists, Kendrick Lamar recently released his latest album GMX. Meanwhile, other reactions read:
”Kendrick cooked him so hard he went to the law,” an X user said.
“Drake I keep tryna defend u but cmon bro,” a netizen stated.
“Rico accusation is lowkey hilarious,” a platform user commented.
For those uninitiated, the RICO Act is often used in criminal cases against organized crime. The same was deployed to convict rapper R. Kelly of s*xual misconduct back in 2021.
Similarly, rapper Young Thug was also embroiled in a lengthy RICO-YSL court battle. Meanwhile, other reactions read:
“Wow, take the L bro even if streams were inflated, the song did damage alone,” a netizen stated.
“Suing someone for making a diss track to soft asf,” an X user said.
Universal Music Group responds to Drake’s legal action in statement
In a statement to Billboard, Universal Music Group stated that allegations of UMG doing “anything to undermine any of its artists is offensive and untrue.” They added:
“We employ the highest ethical practices in our marketing and promotional campaigns. No amount of contrived and absurd legal arguments in this pre-action submission can mask the fact that fans choose the music they want to hear.”
Billboard also revealed that the legal filing is not a lawsuit; rather, it is a petition under the New York law that aims to secure further information before a lawsuit is filed.
The legal filing comes a day after Drizzy appeared on a Kick livestream alongside xQc, where he seemingly addressed his feud with Kendrick Lamar by saying:
“I’m here. Full intact, mind, body, and soul, in case you were wondering. You need facts to take me out, fairytales won’t do it.”
Drizzy had not addressed K. Dot’s latest music drop at the time of writing this article.
