Miley Cyrus recently shed light on the restrictions she faced after her stint on Disney Channel. She shared that the network once banned her from performing any songs from Hannah Montana after the series concluded in 2011.
During the latest episode of Every Single Album podcast, released June 6, 2025, on Spotify, the host Ryan Dombal interviewed Miley. She explained how her journey was seemingly affected by Disney’s control over her former persona. The singer said:
“After I left Disney, I wasn’t allowed to perform any of the Hannah Montana music, it’s not like I wanted to, I mean performing ‘The Best Of Both Worlds’ between ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball,’ wouldn’t have really made sense. But it was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn’t allowed to sing them."

That all changed in August 2024 when Miley Cyrus was honored as a Disney Legend in a ceremony at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
“But after being inducted as a Disney Legend, I was given permission to perform those songs in the future, which is pretty cool," added the singer, referring to the honor she received last year.
While speaking at a D23 event in Anaheim, California, the musician became emotional as everyone cheered for her.
"A little bit of everything has changed, ... but at the same time, nothing has changed at all. I stand here still proud to have been Hannah Montana," Cyrus said.
The rise of Miley Cyrus through Hannah Montana
Hannah Montana is an American hit teen sitcom made by Michael Poryes, Rich Correll, and Barry O’Brien, which aired from March 24, 2006, to January 16, 2011, for four seasons and 98 episodes.
The show follows a teenage girl named Miley Stewart, portrayed by Miley Cyrus, who becomes a famous singer with a different stage name and secret identity called Hannah Montana. She dresses up in blingy, pop star outfits and wears a blonde wig to appear as Hannah Montana. This transformation helps her switch between two worlds—her ordinary life and celebrity spotlight.
Apart from Stewart, the other major characters include her dad Robby Ray (Billy Ray Cyrus), her brother Jackson (Jason Earles), and her best friends Lilly (Emily Osment) and Oliver (Mitchel Musso).
At the time of its release, the show was incredibly successful. According to Guinness World Records, Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour grossed a record $53.4 million in two weeks in February 2008. The concert film of the same tour premiered on Disney Channel on July 26, 2008.
Miley Cyrus began her acting career on the show when she was 13 and completed it as soon as she was 18. During her teenage years, she acted in Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009) as well as recorded for its soundtracks, including The Climb, and Hoedown Throwdown.
