During the latest episode of J Cole’s Inevitable Audio Series, the rapper made a shocking revelation about dissing Kanye West on their 2010 collaborative track, Looking for Trouble. He first spoke about Kanye West hosting a UStream before the release of his 2010 album, My Beautiful Dark Fantasy, where a fan asked him if he was planning to work with J Cole any time in the future.
Cole stated that Kanye’s answer shook him:
“Kanye’s answer was, like — I don’t think anybody watching it would notice, but me being me, I looked at him like, ‘Aw, that sh*t was hella dismissive. He said, ‘I mean, we might put him on one of the G.O.O.D. Fridays or something.’ It was like a, ‘Yes, but.’ He’s not a n**ga that I would feature on my album.”
He then claimed how, shortly after the UStream, he received a call from Ye to invite him for a recording for his G.O.O.D. Friday series. However, J Cole allegedly declined the invitation due to time constraints. He recalled receiving a call on a Wednesday for the verse to be out on Friday.
Cole exclaimed how Kanye insisted, and Cole agreed. He then narrated how he had traveled for two hours and wrote his verses on the way. He also stated that he had just had the beat and wrote down the verse, dissing West for his comments about J Cole during his stream.
“The world has never known that. Those were direct shots at Kanye because days prior I had seen the n**ga be like, ‘Ah, we might put him on a G.O.O.D. Friday song or something.’ And those are shots I know only Kanye would feel.”
“Downplayed me to downgrade me”— J Cole’s rap in Looking for Trouble explored as he admits dissing Ye in the song
Looking for Trouble was released as a part of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Fridays in 2010. J Cole admitted that nobody noticed that his verse was a diss targeting West, as he rapped:
“Hey, Cole World, make way for the chosen one. What you now hear is puttin’ fear in all the older ones. Downplayed me to downgrade me like they don’t notice him. Your shoes too big to fill? I can barely squeeze my toes in ‘em. F**king h*es while teachin' n**gas to hold your sons.”
He also admitted how the song's final version left him unsatisfied, as he claimed that it was way different than he thought it would have been.
“It’s not wild offbeat, but when you nudge it, it’s slight. It just makes you sound either early or late. It made my flow sound stiff... This is not how I recorded it. In the context of everything, I was already on some s**t like, ‘Yo, this is some weird s**t going on.’ I felt it was on some sabotage s**t," J Cole said.
For the unversed, G.O.O.D. Fridays was a musical series started by Kanye West in 2010 in support of his albums My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and The Life of Pablo.
Looking For Trouble also had verses from Pusha T, Cyhi the Prynce, and Big Sean. While Cole’s revelation about dissing Kanye shocked many, Ye has not responded to the statement yet.
