The Boston Bruins put the finishing touches on a comeback victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night but didn’t have much time to enjoy it as they immediately headed out on the road to face the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center in downtown Chicago on Wednesday.
While it was over a decade ago, fans of both teams still well remember the 2013 Stanley Cup Final between the two sides that ended in jubilation for Chicago and heartbreak for Boston.
Only Brad Marchand remains from either side of that series, and he had his sights set on helping the Bruins secure another two points against a second straight Original Six opponent. And when it was all said and done, the Bruins doubled up the Blackhawks by a 4-2 final, with Marchand playing a key part.
The Blackhawks struck first thanks to Alex Vlasic’s first goal of the season just 1:23 after the opening faceoff, but the Bruins responded with Morgan Geekie’s third goal, knotting the score at 1-1.
Marchand then announced his presence in a major way, scoring two goals for the Bruins in just over two minutes early in the second period, increasing Boston’s lead to 3-1.
The Blackhawks countered with Jason Dickinson’s fifth goal, cutting the lead to 3-2. But not to be outdone by Marchand, Geekie secured his second goal of the game and fourth of the season just over five minutes into the final frame.
Jeremy Swayman finished with 20 saves in the win, while Petr Mrazek was victimized four times on the 27 shots he faced from Boston.

#3. Jeremy Swayman
The Bruins goaltender who finally agreed to an eight-year extension shortly before the regular season began hasn't exactly lived up to the lofty expectations that came with the contract.
But he's slowly begun rounding back into form, and he appeared completely at ease in his performance against the Blackhawks.
#2. Morgan Geekie
A two-goal performance will go a long way for the confidence of Geekie, who isn't typically relied upon by the Bruins to provide an offensive punch.
When a team gets scoring from their depth players, it's more often than not a good night – and that rang true for Boston on Wednesday.
#1. Brad Marchand
The Bruins captain once again demonstrated why he remains one of the most valuable players in hockey to his respective franchise.
While he has an uncanny ability to agitate, he also continues to possess an offensive flair – and it was on full display with his two tallies against the Blackhawks on Wednesday.
The Bruins will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Philadelphia Flyers at TD Garden on Saturday.
