The Winnipeg Jets have made National Hockey League history, becoming the first team to start a season with 14 victories in their first 15 games.
Continuing that run was viewed as a tough challenge for them, especially against the Eastern Conference-contending New York Rangers on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. But just 57 seconds into the game, the Jets made it clear that they had no intention of stopping their winning ways.
The Winnipeg Jets now have 15 wins in their first 16 games, thanks to their 6-3 win over the Rangers, with Mark Scheifele scoring just under a minute into the game, firing a glove-side shot past Igor Shesterkin.
The Rangers answered later in the first period, with Will Cuylle banging in a rebound past Connor Hellebuyck, but the Jets gained the upper hand again in the second period thanks to a power-play marker from Gabriel Vilardi.
Alexis Lafreniere responded with a power-play goal of his own, but the Jets retook the lead when the scorching-hot Kyle Connor scored his 10th of the season.
Scheifele scored again early in the third period; Kaapo Kakko pulled the Rangers back within one, but the visiting Jets put the game away when former New York forward Vladislav Namestnikov and Connor found the back of the net.
Hellebuyck finished with 33 saves, while Shesterkin made 27 stops in a losing effort.
3 major takeaways from Winnipeg Jets' 6-3 win over New York Rangers
#1. The Jets took advantage of Mika Zibanejad's miscues
The Jets doubled the Rangers' scoring output in the 6-3 win and took advantage of three giveaways from Rangers forward Mika Zibanajad that each directly led to a Winnipeg goal.
#2. The Jets shut down New York's top-10 special teams unit
While the Winnipeg Jets allowed one power-play goal, they held the Rangers at bay on their three other opportunities with a man in the penalty box.
Stopping a dangerous Rangers power-play unit is no easy feat, and the Jets have proven their blazing start to the season is no fluke by doing so.
#3. Connor Hellebuyk continues to make his case for a second Vezina Trophy
Having won the Vezina Trophy last season, Hellebuyck is doing everything in his power to earn another one this year.
He made several key saves, especially during the Rangers' second-period push. He has now stopped 100 of the last 104 shots fired his way.
