Less than 24 hours after the blockbuster trade sending Mikko Rantanen to Carolina for Martin Necas and Jack Drury, the Avs were back in action. Having lost two games in a row entering Saturday's action, Colorado hoped that Necas and Drury's debuts could spark them. While they controlled all facets of the game, star netminder Jeremy Swayman had other plans.

Colorado had a strong start to the game, which saw the Bruins on their heels for the majority of the period. However, Swayman kept things scoreless, stopping all 12 shots the Avalanche threw his way. 0-0 after one.

That changed quickly as Artturi Lehkonen broke the tie just 1:30 into the second period. The rest of the second was relatively low-event, as the Avalanche held the Bruins to just eight shots on goal after two periods of play.

Unfortunately for Colorado, it all went to waste in the third period. David Pastrnak found Morgan Geekie in the slot to tie the game at one just 25 seconds into the final frame. Five minutes later, Pastrnak again found Geekie to give Boston a 2-1 lead.

Despite consistent pressure in the offensive zone, the Avs couldn't solve Swayman. Pastrnak then sealed the game with an empty-net goal.

The Colorado Avalanche won't have much time to dwell on the defeat as they travel to the Big Apple to face the New York Rangers on Sunday afternoon. The puck drops at 1 p.m. ET at Madison Square Garden.

Here are the three least impressive player performances from Colorado's 3-1 loss to Boston.

3 least impressive players from Colorado Avalanche's 3-1 loss to Boston Bruins

#1. Scott Wedgewood

In a game dominated by the Avalanche, Scott Wedgewood was outplayed by Jeremy Swayman. The Avs netminder surrendered two goals on just 14 shots in the loss, while Swayman stopped 27 out of 28 shots.

In a low-scoring game, goaltending played a huge part in the end result. Wedgewood has been quite solid for Colorado, so they'll hope he plays better in his next opportunity.

#2. Jonathan Drouin

Jonathan Drouin had plenty of chances to score on Saturday but just couldn't convert. Drouin finished with one shot on goal and one hit in 24:22 of ice time.

He fumbled several passes that could have led to goals. Playing on Nathan MacKinnon's line comes with high expectations, so the Avs need more from Drouin, especially without Mikko Rantanen.

#3. Devon Toews

The shutdown defenseman will want to forget Saturday's game. Devon Toews registered six shots on goal while having a -3 rating in 25:44 minutes of action. He also lost his man in front of the net, which led to Morgan Geekie's game-winning goal in the third period.

Toews was very active in the offensive zone this afternoon. Colorado just needs that to translate into more goals.
