The Montreal Canadiens entered Saturday's game against the Winnipeg Jets looking to shake off the sting of their season-worst 9-2 setback against the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier in the week.
Unfortunately for the Canadiens, they were still left searching for answers. The Jets doubled up the Habs by a 4-2 final score at Canada Life Centre in downtown Winnipeg.
With the win, the Jets improved to 22-9-1, while the Montreal Canadiens dropped further back with a record of 11-16-3.
Things started well enough for the Habs, rookie Lane Hutson potted his first NHL goal at 7:48 of the first period. However, the Jets quickly turned the tide, taking a 2-1 lead within just over two minutes, with goals from Gabriel Vilardi and captain Adam Lowry.
Heading into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead, the Jets extended their advantage to two goals in the second period on Kyle Connor’s 17th of the season.
Montreal made things interesting in the third period, cutting the lead to 3-2 with Josh Anderson’s fifth goal of the campaign.
However, with goaltender Sam Montembeault pulled for an extra attacker, the Canadiens were unable to find the tying goal. Vladislav Namestnikov secured the win for the Jets with an empty-net goal with seven seconds remaining.
Montembeault bounced back from his abysmal start against the Penguins by making 23 saves, while Connor Hellebuyck made 26 saves in a winning effort.
3 least impressive players from Montreal Canadiens' 4-2 loss to Winnipeg Jets
#1. Cole Caufield
Montreal's top goal-scoring forward was a non-factor for the Canadiens against the Jets, except in a negative fashion. He made two separate trips to the penalty box and finished with a minus-1 rating.
#2. Christian Dvorak
Like Caufield, Dvorak also took an ill-timed penalty, allowing Winnipeg's efficient power play a chance to add another goal to the scoreboard.
#3. Sam Montembeault
While Montembeault bounced back from one of his worst performances of the season against the Penguins, he still allowed three goals to the Jets, at least one of which he’ll want back.
Montembeault may have resembled the goaltender who made history with a 48-save shutout on Opening Night against the Toronto Maple Leafs in October, but he wasn’t able to come up with the saves he needed against the Jets.
The Montreal Canadiens will have a chance to get back into the win column when they host the struggling Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday at Bell Centre.
