The Boston Bruins (2-2) notched a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers (3-3) at TD Garden in their preseason matchup on Tuesday. The Bruins controlled the game from start to finish, scoring three times in the third period to seal the win.
Justin Brazeau, Tyler Johnson, Charlie Coy, and Mark Kastelic scored for the Boston Bruins. Meanwhile, Travis Konecny got the Flyers' lone goal. Philly hung on through two periods, but could not hold the 1-1 tie in the third period.
Here's a closer look at three major takeaways from the Bruins’ 4-1 preseason win over the Flyers.
3 major takeaways from Boston Bruins' preseason win vs Philadelphia Flyers
#1. Elias Lindholm hit the ice for the first time this preseason
The Boston Bruins got a huge boost with Elias Lindholm back on the ice. Lindholm had been dealing with injuries throughout the summer and heading into training camp.
Lindholm did not have a standout performance against the Philadelphia Flyers. Nevertheless, it was crucial to get Lindholm back on the ice as the Bruins are counting on him to be the team’s number-one center this.
Lindholm finished the game with 15:09 minutes of ice time and two shots on goal. Moving forward, Lindholm is expected to play a more prominent role as the Bruins lack the center depth other teams have in the Atlantic Division.
#2. Brandon Bussi held the fort
At this point, it appears that Brandon Bussi has the inside track for the backup goalie role heading into Opening Night. Bussi got the start against the Philadelphia Flyers, giving up a goal on 14 shots. While Bussi wasn’t overly tested, he held the fort thanks to his teammates’ solid defensive effort.
It’s worth keeping in mind that the Bruins expect Bussi to provide solid goaltending in the limited number of starts he makes. Of course, if and when Jeremy Swayman comes back, Bussi would most likely head back to the AHL.
In the meantime, the Bruins will be counting on Bussi to put up serviceable performances like tonight if and when he’s called upon during the regular season.
#3. Brad Marchand exited the game early
Marchand hit the ice again following a summer of recovery from various surgeries. However, Marchand only skated for about four minutes and did not return to the bench for the second period.
The good news for the Bruins is that Marchand left the game due to an undisclosed illness and not an injury, according to NESN. The club should provide further updates on its captain’s status following the game.
It remains to be seen if Marchand suits up for Boston’s next preseason game against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.
