Thanks to their 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues (1-4) on Tuesday night at Enterprise Center, the Columbus Blue Jackets improved their preseason record to 4-2.
Following a scoreless opening 20 minutes of play, the Blues struck first thanks to a power-play goal from defenseman Justin Faulk. However, the Blue Jackets would respond thanks to a goal from Russian forward Yegor Chinakhov, who banged home a rebound off Adam Fantilli's initial attempt.
Gavin Brindley would give the Blue Jackets the lead just a little past the midway point of the second period; as he and his teammates would hold off every St. Louis attempt to knot the score. Columbus then sealed the victory thanks to an empty-net goal with one second left in regulation from Mathieu Olivier.
Goaltender Jet Greaves made 22 saves on the 23 shots he faced for Columbus, while Joel Hoffer finished with 32 saves on 34 shots.
Here are three big takeaways from Columbus' win over St. Louis on Tuesday.
3 major takeaways from Blue Jackets' 3-1 preseason win vs Blues
#1. Goaltender Jet Greaves was strong in net
While Hoffer may have had the busier workload, Greaves made several key stops of his own to protect the Blue Jackets' lead and make their victory possible.
Greaves, who joined the Blue Jackets as an undrafted free agent, amassed a 30-12-4 record last season with the American Hockey League affiliate Cleveland Monsters while posting a 2.93 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage and one shutout.
He's also entered himself into the Columbus record books, having set the franchise mark for most saves in an NHL debut in April 2023 with a staggering 46 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
#2. Columbus boasts a pair of players who lead NHL in scoring
Thanks to Olivier's goal, he tied teammate Fantilli with his fourth goal of exhibition play, both of which currently lead all NHL players. It may only be preseason, but it's worth noticing.
Fantilli had himself a productive evening with a pair of assists, while Chinakhov and Brindley each netted their first preseason tallies.
#3. Blue Jackets hold off Blues lineup mostly filled with regulars
The Blues featured many of their regular roster players in their lineup, including Robert Thomas, Brandon Saad, Jordan Kyrou, Jake Neighbours, Pavel Buchnevich and Brayden Schenn.
The fact that Columbus emerged victorious is a stepping stone that they can use as the regular season approaches.
The Blue Jackets wrap up their preseason schedule at home with a matchup against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins at Nationwide Arena on Wednesday.
