The Vancouver Canucks managed to douse the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, earning a 4-3 victory in overtime in exhibition play at the Abbotsford Centre, home of their American Hockey League affiliate Abbotsford Canucks.A pair of newcomers factored into Vancouver's win, as key free agent signings Jake DeBrusk (two goals) and Daniel Sprong (late game-tying goal) announced their presence in a major way.The Flames got goals from 19-year-old Samuel Honzek, Calgary native Jake Bean, and Dryden Hunt. Max Sasson also tallied for Vancouver, hoping to make a strong case for himself after spending last season playing in the AHL.Devin Cooley (11 saves on 13 shots) and Dustin Wolfe (16 saves on 19 shots) split time in the Flames' net, while Jiri Patera (16 saves on 19 shots) played the entire game for the Canucks.#3. Jake DeBrusk already endearing himself to Vancouver fansSigned as a free agent after several years with the Boston Bruins, DeBrusk tallied two goals on Wednesday night including the game-winner in overtime:Afterward, he acknowledged that there was still plenty of rust for himself and the rest of his teammates to shake off despite the victory."I think that [in] training camp, there's been good days and bad days," said DeBrusk. "And obviously this is the first game, there were going to be some rough spots. But in saying that, you get more comfortable, like I was saying earlier, with the reps and the lines and different things. So, there were a couple mistakes out there again, but those will get cleaned up."Canucks management is hoping that DeBrusk, who agreed to a seven-year contract to join Vancouver after scoring 19 goals with 21 assists for Boston in 2023-24, will be a key part of their offensive attack.#2. Daniel Sprong can still bring itAnother free-agent signing from the offseason, Sprong scored a spectacular coast-to-coast goal to knot the score at 3-3 with just seconds left in regulation. Picking up speed in his own zone, he proceeded to beat several Flames defenders before deking goaltender Devin Cooley:Sprong has developed a reputation as a journeyman, as the Canucks are his sixth NHL club since the start of the 2018-19 season. But if he can produce consistently, don't be surprised to see him get a new deal beyond this campaign.#1. The Canucks battled to the finishVancouver may have trailed but refused to lay down and die. Their comeback effort was praised by head coach Rick Tocchet, the reigning Jack Adams Trophy winner as the NHL's top coach from last season. He also acknowledged that he liked seeing the players implement the things they've been working on in practice into game action.“It's always nice to see the elements that we've been working on, work in the game. Like I said, the two games were fine, I just think we have got to get a little bit faster – thinking faster,” Tocchet said. The Canucks will continue their exhibition schedule with a matchup against the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle on Friday, Sept. 27.
