The Edmonton Oilers hosted the St. Louis Blues in a Saturday night clash at Rogers Place, the first time St. Louis has visited Edmonton since the firing of coach Drew Bannister and the subsequent hiring of Jim Montgomery.

It also marked the return of former Oilers players Phillip Broberg and Dylan Holloway to Edmonton for the first time since joining the Blues, who gave them both offer sheets that the Oilers did not to match.

The Oilers ensured their return wasn't a good one. Goals from Corey Perry, Connor McDavid, Zach Hyman, and Troy Stecher paced the scoring for Edmonton, who won 4-2.

Holloway did manage to find the back of the net for the Blues, their first goal of the game after falling behind 3-0.

Meanwhile, former Edmonton captain Jake Neighbours also scored for the Blues, who lost in regulation for the first time under Montgomery.

3 reasons why Edmonton Oilers won 4-2 over St. Louis Blues

#3. Zach Hyman continued his scoring streak

Hyman missed five games with an undisclosed injury, but tallied twice against the Columbus Blue Jackets in his return to the lineup earlier in the week.

His goal against the Blues gives him three in two games; this will aid his confidence as he began the season slowly after finishing 2023-24 with 54 goals.

#2. Stuart Skinner was strong between the pipes

The Oilers goaltender, who has battled inconsistency this season, performed well with 29 saves, including a handful of high-percentage chances by the Blues.

"I thought it was pretty solid for the most part," Skinner said. "There was a couple of details that we definitely left out, but that takes everyone to step up and be a little bit better... For myself personally, I thought I was pretty solid, could've helped out a little bit in some areas, but for the most part, I thought it was a solid team effort."

He improved to 9-7-2, and his goals-against-average has recently dipped back under 3.00; it's currently 2.92.

#1. Connor McDavid once again made it possible with a pair of points

The best player in the National Hockey League picked up another pair of points on Saturday with a goal and an assist.

While just 12 goals and 23 assists in 23 games may be a bit below McDavid's usual standards, he's still on pace to eclipse the 100-point mark again.
