Last season, Nashville Predators general manager Barry Trotz lit a fire under his team by canceling a group outing. The team responded in a big way by moving into playoff contention. Now, Trotz hinted he may clear roster space if the team doesn’t improve, allowing young prospects a chance to develop.
The Predators are sitting in last place in the central division with a record of 4-8-1.
"If we don't get it going," Trotz said on '102.5 The Game.' "Then I'm going to start out rebuilding plan."
If the front office decides to make some big moves between now and the trade deadline, here are five players they could part ways with.
5 Nashville Predators players who could be traded
#1: Colton Sissons
Colton Sissons has struggled to find the back of the net this season. In 13 games, Sissons has logged just one point while posting a +/- of -12. Given his lack of production and the fact that he still has one more year remaining on his deal, Nashville could look to trade him if things don't improve.
In doing so, they would open up an opportunity for one of their budding young prospects to move into a bottom-six forward spot to develop this season.
#2: Mark Jankowski
Much like Colton Sissons, Mark Jankowski has struggled to find the back of the net as well. In 11 games, Jankowski has recorded just one point while posting a +/- of -2.
While Jankowski logged 15 points in 32 games last season, he's on track to log just three points in the same span this year.
#3: Cole Smith
Another forward Nashville could look to part ways with this season is Cole Smith, who has logged just two points in 13 games. On top of the fact that he's on track for a down year, Smith has posted a +/- of -8 this season.
Like Jankowski and Sissons, trading Smith would open up space for a young forward like Joakim Kemell to get valuable minutes while clearing out cap space.
#4: Michael McCarron
Michael McCarron's play this year hasn't been on par with last year's. After finishing the 2023-24 season with a +/- of four and 22 points in 70 games, McCarron has logged just two points in 11 games.
At the same time, he's posted a +/- of -9, which, if it holds up, will be his worst statistical year since the 2015-16 season.
#5: Luke Schenn
In addition to parting ways with forwards to clear space for young prospects, the Predators could part ways with defenceman Luke Schenn. He is in the second year of a three-year deal worth $8.25 million, but his play hasn't been up to snuff.
This season, he's posted a +/- of -4, and while the team posting a defensive rating that's in the bottom ten of the NHL isn't his fault, parting ways with him may be in the Predators' best interest.
