During Sunday's highly anticipated "Battle of Alberta" clash, Edmonton Oilers fans were left furious when Corey Perry's goal was disallowed due to goalie interference.
Perry seemed to have scored and given the Oilers a 2-0 lead in the first period, but after a lengthy review, the goal was overturned.
The NHL explained that a video review showed Perry's presence at the crease, which hindered Flames goalie Dan Vladar's ability to play his position before scoring the goal.
The home crowd and the Oilers team were exasperated with the decision. Here's what fans on X/Twitter said about Corey Perry's disallowed goal, with one tweeting:
"What an awful decision."
Another chimed in:
"Absolutely atrocious call. Andersson pushed him into the crease and Ladar suckers Perry in the back with a blocker. Only contact made was by two white shirts. Worst call I have ever seen."
Here are some of the other top reactions on X:
"These ridiculous calls are having a significant presence on this game," wrote another.
"Time for the league to write the crease rule the same as ringette. NO PLAYER OTHER THAN THE GOALIE IN THE CREASE OR CAN TOUCH THE PUCK IN THE CREASE," one X user tweeted.
"His skate was on the red paint and his heel barely over. Vladar was able to regain his position and had free mobility," explained another.
"Then make that the standard all year for all goalie interference calls. Which, of course, they won’t. It’s the most comically random and subjective rule in a sport full of them," another user commented.
The Calgary Flames scored accumulated points after beating the Edmonton Oilers 4-1. Notably, the Oilers have now lost three games and face the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.
Corey Perry calls for accountability
Following the Oilers' 5-2 defeat to the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday, Corey Perry voiced his frustration, emphasizing the need for accountability among players.
The Oilers' defense has been subpar so far, conceding 15 goals in three games. Perry highlighted that everyone must reflect on their performances and commit to making the necessary plays, especially in high-pressure situations.
"You can make all the excuses in the world, whatever you want to say, but everybody's got to look themselves in the mirror and start to bear down and make those plays hard. it's frustrating."
Corey Perry has scored once this season.
