The Jets outplayed the Blue Jackets, opening up a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. Nikolaj Ehlers had a hat trick, with Mason Appleton, Josh Morrissey and Gabriel Vilardi getting the other goals for the Winnipeg Jets. Meanwhile, Sean Kuraly and Sean Monahan replied for the Blue Jackets.
So, let’s take a look at the 3 reasons why the Winnipeg Jets routed the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night.
3 reasons why Winnipeg Jets won against Columbus Blue Jackets
#3. The Jets dominated the game
The Jets dominated the game from start to finish. While the Blue Jackets tied the game at one in the first period, and then pulled to within 3-2 in the second, the game wasn’t very close. The Jets outshot the Blue Jackets 44-22, with Columbus chasing the game for much of the night.
It’s worth pointing out that backup netminder Eric Comrie had a great night. He stopped 20 of 22 shots. Comrie’s performance was crucial as it allowed the Jets to rest Vezina candidate Connor Hellebuyck.
#2. Connor continues point streak
Kyle Connor extended his point streak to start the season. Connor assisted on Vilardi’s third-period goal to push his point streak to 11 games. Connor has been on fire this season. Connor had three points in his last outing against the Detroit Red Wings, and four against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the game before.
Overall, Connor has registered 18 points (9G, 9A) this season. His torrid start has been one of the reasons why the Winnipeg Jets have gone 10-1 to open the year.
#1. Ehlers on fire
Nikolaj Ehlers had a whale of a game, scoring a hat trick. He added an assist to make it a four-point night against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The performance earned Ehlers the game’s first star, capping off a great night for the Jets’ offense.
Like Connor, Ehlers has also been hot to start the season. Ehlers has registered 15 points (7G, 8A), complementing a powerful Jets attack that leads virtually every category in the league. Ehlers has been the anchor on the Jets’ second line along with Vladislav Namestnikov and rookie Cole Perfetti.
The Jets get an off-day on Saturday before squaring off on Sunday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Canada Life Center. The Jets will look to continue improving on their league-best record.
