Hampus Lindholm and the Boston Bruins are in action on Tuesday night, taking on the St. Louis Blues in a rematch of the 2019 Stanley Cup Final, a hard-fought seven-game series that saw the Blues capture their first title at TD Garden.
However, the Bruins suffered a significant setback on the health front, as efenseman Lindholm sustained an injury and won't return to the game, according to the latest update from the Bruins' X account.
"UPDATE: Hampus Lindholm (lower-body) will not return to tonight's game," the Bruins posted on social media.
Lindholm was injured after he blocked a shot from Blues defenseman Justin Faulk in the high slot with just over three minutes remaining in the first period of play. He immediately collapsed to the ice in discomfort before eventually making his way back to the bench.
Bruins journalists noticed that Lindholm wasn't on the bench to begin the second period before the official announcement came through that he won't be returning to the contest.
He had played in 8:17 of ice time before his injury. This season, Lindholm has scored three goals and four assists, registering a -4 rating.
Hampus Lindholm's absence is a major blow for the Bruins
Lindholm averages 21:38 of ice time for the Bruins this season and is among their defensive leaders.
A native of Sweden, Lindholm was originally taken with the sixth overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft by the Anaheim Ducks. He played the first few years of his career with the Ducks and was rewarded with a six-year $31.5 million extension in October 2016.
However, he found himself on the move in the final year of the deal, getting dealt to the Bruins at the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline. It didn't take Boston long to lock him down, inking him to an eight-year, $52 million extension.
"They always have that winning mindset," Lindholm said after signing the deal. "They find ways to get in the mix and compete. I've missed it the last three years. There's nothing more fun. I can only imagine playing in Boston. I'm ready to go to battle."
In 761 career NHL games with the Ducks and the Bruins, Hampus Lindholm has scored 73 goals with 240 assists, adding another five goals and 20 assists in 79 career postseason games.
The Blues lead 2-0 going into the second intermission.
