Has an NHL team ever made a comeback from a 3-0 deficit in the Stanley Cup playoffs?

Carolina Hurricanes v Florida Panthers - Game Three
Carolina Hurricanes are down 3-0 to the Florida Panthers

The Carolina Hurricanes are down 3-0 in their series against the Florida Panthers in the NHL's Eastern Conference Final. Luckily, teams have won four straight before, so there is still a chance for them.

In the history of the NHL's Stanley Cup playoffs, 190 teams - now 191 - have gone down 3-0 and only four have come back to win the series.

The first time a team overcame a 3-0 series deficit in the NHL's playoff was in 1942. The Toronto Maple Leafs won four straight games against the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Final. The Red Wings led Game 4 2-0 (and 3-2 in the third period) but the Maple Leafs came back to win Game 4 and then won the following games 9-3, 3-0, and 3-1 to win the Stanley Cup.

The second time an NHL team came back from down 3-0 was when the New York Islanders defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1975.

In 2010, the Philadelphia Flyers won four straight against the Boston Bruins after going down 3-0. The Flyers had to win in overtime in Game 4 and after an injury to Philadelphia's starting goaltender, backup Michael Leighton won two straight games to win the series. The Flyers ended up making it to the Stanley Cup Finals but lost in seven games to the Chicago Blackhawks.

The last time a team came back from down 3-0 was the 2014 Los Angeles Kings who beat the San Jose Sharks. San Jose won the first three games 6-3, 7-2, and 4-3 in overtime but the Kings won four straight to advance to the second round. Los Angeles ended up winning the Stanley Cup in five games against the New York Rangers.

Carolina Hurricanes not losing faith

Although only four teams have come back from being 3-0 in the NHL's Stanley Cup playoffs, the Carolina Hurricanes aren't letting that faze them.

"We can't do much more. We like how we're playing, clearly. We've got to find a way to put one in. Defensively, we've given up nothing, really," Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour said.
"They've got one of the most potent offenses in the league and if you would have told me that you'd be holding them to 20 shots per night, you'd be pretty happy.
"It's just weird. We're creating offense. We hit a couple posts tonight. It's there for us. We just have to find a way for us to put it in... We've got to find a way to break through and give ourselves a chance to get back in this."

However, no NHL team has ever lost a Conference Finals when leading 3-0 in the series as NHL teams are a perfect 46-0. The Carolina Hurricanes certainly have their work cut out for them against the Florida Panthers.
