The Detroit Red Wings won a high-scoring affair against the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night. The Wings took home the extra point, beating the Sabres 6-5 via the shootout.

The Red Wings came from behind, erasing a 5-3 deficit in the third period to send the game to overtime. Overtime settled nothing, so Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin scored in the shootout to lift the Detroit Red Wings past the Sabres.

Andrew Copp scored twice in regulation, with Alex DeBrincat, Mortiz Seider and Raymond adding the other tallies for Detroit. Meanwhile, Jason Zucker had two goals of his own for the Sabres, with Zach Benson, Tage Thompson and Nicolas Aube-Kubel registering the other goals for the Sabres.

Here’s a closer look at the three key reasons why the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Buffalo Sabres in the shootout.

3 reasons why Detroit Red Wings defeated Buffalo Sabres

#3 The Red Wings overcame a physical matchup

The Red Wings overcame a tough, physical team in the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres outhit the Wings 28-12. However, that didn’t stop the Red Wings from winning nearly 56% of the draws and outshooting the Sabres 31-21.

It’s worth pointing out that the Sabres leveraged their physical game to build a 5-3 lead. However, the Sabres blew such lead and could not recover the two points. Kudos to the Red Wings for finding a way to come back to win the game.

#2 The Red Wings’ resilience

The Detroit Red Wings have been playing every other day for the past two weeks. While fatigue could have played a role against the Sabres, the Wings’ resilience came through. The Red Wings poured on the pressure in the third period, tying the game with less than five minutes to go in the third.

After two lackluster periods, especially the first in which starting goaltender Ville Husso was pulled, the Wings dominated the third, outshooting the Sabres 12-4. Both clubs were cautious in overtime, failing to register one shot on goal. But the Wings prevailed in the end, thanks to Larkin’s nifty goal in the shootout.

#1 The Red Wings’ top players came through

The Detroit Red Wings top players came through. Mortiz Seider tied the game late in the third, capping a two-point night. Similarly, Andrew Copp had two goals, Larkin had two assists, Raymond had a goal and an assist and DeBrincat also scored.

The five-goal offensive outburst was a welcome sight for the Red Wings as the team managed just one goal against the Colorado Avalanche in their previous game.

The Red Wings will now get a couple of days off before facing the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night.
