Mitch Marner has reportedly cancelled his annual Toronto charity event - scheduled for July 10 and 11 - according to NHL insider Jonah Sigel of YYZ Sports Media via X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.
Sigel also shared a statement from an unknown source, which reads:
“After thoughtful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event, scheduled for July 10th and 11th. The uncertainty around Mitch’s summer schedule makes it challenging to plan responsibly.
"Out of respect for the time and commitment of our partners and supporters, we feel it’s best to make this decision now... While we are disappointed not to come together this year, the Foundation will continue to honour all its commitments to charitable partners."
This news adds to the belief that Mitch Marner is leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs after eight seasons (2016-2025). As he would become a free agent on July 1, the Leafs reportedly tried to negotiate a new deal, but his camp seemed uninterested.
Later reports from Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun said that calls to the foundation were not returned right away.
"A call by Postmedia to the Toronto Events Centre asking if the event was indeed shelved was referred back to Marner." Hornby wrote in his Monday's column.
Mitch Marner had 102 points in the 2024-25 regular season, with 13 points in 13 playoff games. Following the Leafs' elimination in the second round, there were questions about changes to the team. GM Brad Treliving released a statement after the playoff exit, indicating the team needs a change in “DNA.”
Elliotte Friedman named the teams interested in Mitch Marner
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said Mitch Marner will likely test free agency. He might speak to other teams after July 1.
"Marner is the number one name on the market," Friedman said. "...Anaheim is one of the teams that's gonna bid for him... Carolina... very interested in him. People believe LA is very interested... Vegas is definitely a team to watch."
Carolina even tried to trade for him before, but Marner blocked it. Now, the Panthers could attempt once again.
Some reports say he may sign a short-term deal instead of the full seven years. So now, fans may need to prepare for his possible departure. Nothing is confirmed yet, but signs suggest he will move on from the Maple Leafs.
