Sidney Crosby is one of the best hockey players of all time, and certainly a Pittsburgh Penguins legend. The 37-year-old (having just turned that age today) is also a fan favorite, so much so that fans don't want to see him leave even if he's getting old. They also don't want to see him wasted, as it's rare for a team to have a legendary player and the Penguins were not a playoff team last year. They narrowly missed out from reaching the postseason, falling three points behind the Washington Capitals for the final spot in the Eastern Conference. That's something the fans want to see fixed. On Crosby's birthday, they believe it begins and ends with his status on the team."It is amazing this guy is still playing. He has had a crazy career so far," one fan said."Announce the new contract," another added."Let’s get that contract signed! Penguin for life," one said."Extension coming today? Happy birthday to the golden boy," another added.Crosby has said before that he's not yet ready for retirement, but he's taking it one year at a time. The Penguins have yet to extend him beyond the current deal, which has some fans antsy about what the future holds for the future Hall of Fame NHL player.NHL insider spoke about talks of Sidney Crosby's extensionFor now, it's not all that surprising that Sidney Crosby doesn't have an extension yet. Mark Madden, an NHL insider, said an extension is probably coming at some point this week, perhaps in line with the birthday.Sidney Crosby has not yet signed an extension (Imagn)However, if time continues to pass and he doesn't sign, fans can begin to wonder if an extension is happening at all. Via Trib Live, he added:“If he’s not signed, this is something that drags on all year. It’s gonna drive him crazy, so he will sign the contract, just to avoid that. Honestly, if he doesn’t sign the contract, they should trade him this year.”That outcome is about as unfathomable as they come. Crosby has never played anywhere but Pittsburgh in his illustrious career.
