Chicago Blackhawks superstar Patrick Kane secures his move to the New York Rangers

After weeks of rumors and speculation, the Patrick Kane trade saga has finally come to an end. The Chicago Blackhawks superstar was moved to the New York Rangers on Tuesday, completing his desired deal. In return, the Blackhawks received a 2023 second-round pick, which carries conditions to improve to a first-round pick, as well as a 2023 fourth-round pick.

As the NHL Trade Deadline approached, it seemed more and more likely that Kane would be moved by the Blackhawks, ending a productive 16-year tenure with the club.

While Kane had a full no-trade clause in his contract, he said he was willing to waive it in order to facilitate a deal to either the Toronto Maple Leafs or the New York Rangers. However, given the fact that both teams made notable trades, it appeared that Kane would either need to expand his trade list or ride out his expiring contract.

The former Blackhawks star expressed his frustration after the New York Rangers acquired former St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko. The trade seemingly all but guaranteed that a move to the Big Apple would no longer be available given the contracts of both Kane and Tarasenko.

However, according to sources, the two sides were able to come to terms on the financial side of the deal by bringing in the Arizona Coyotes. Chicago will retain 50% of Patrick Kane's $10.5 million contract, sources told ESPN, and the Arizona Coyotes signed on to take on 50% of that, meaning Kane will only count for $2.625 million against the Rangers' cap.

A look at Patrick Kane's tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks

The move to the New York Rangers concludes one of the most successful careers in franchise history. After being drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks with the first overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, Kane quickly emerged as one of the top goal-scoring talents in the NHL. During his rookie campaign, Kane posted 21 goals and 51 assists to secure the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie.

During 16 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, Patrick Kane won three Stanley Cups, was a four-time All-Star, the 2012-13 Conn Smythe winner, the 2015-16 Art Ross Trophy winner, the 2015-16 Hart Trophy winner, and the 2015-16 Ted Lindsay Trophy winner.

Along with Jonathan Toews, the duo made the Blackhawks one of the most successful franchises in the last 25 years.
